if you get this card for 700, just buy 2x6970s for cooler temperature, less power and slightly faster performance. I think this card isn't something fitting for most people.

Actually, after reading a bunch of reviews, 6970s are hotter and louder and use more power. But they are better value.

Hardware canucks isnt being fair to the 6990s.
Hes testing games in 1920x1200 + 2560x1600.
Anyways 15% slower, but cost ~40% less. (700$ 6990 vs 2x 580's for 500$ (1000$ total))

700$ x 1.40 (+40% ) = 980$
6990 is more than 40% cheaper.


at those low resolutions... yes the 580 is faster by the amounts you show above.

HOWEVER... what happends at 5760x1080 resolutions? (people that buy these game at 5700x res)

Im pretty sure at those resolutions the 6990 beats the 580 SLI in FPS on avg. in most games (because it has more memory).

People that buy a 6990, wont play games at 1920x1200 resolutions or lower, it makes no sense to get that powerfull a setup for it.

Your falling in to the more memory is always better trap.
If the Antilles could have been closer to gtx 580 performance , then it would have been a bit better recieved.

It depends really on what bios the switch is on. If you look at the overclocking page of the HC review. The Uber 6990 is a little closer to 580SLI.

Avg power when playing games:
580 = 390watts
6990 = 252watts

a differnce of ~50% in watt use! for about 15% less performance.

When you "overclock" the 6990 by useing the AUSUM button, it gets abit closer than 15% to the 580 SLI.. but ofc then your useing more energy too.


However 40% price differnce, for less than 15% performance differnce.
6990 isnt such a bad buy (even if its abit slower than 580 SLI).

580 prices should come down soon. I can't see it selling well at ~$500 when for ~$200 more it's going to dwarf the 580.

On the other hand, Nvidia might keep the price high just so they can charge more for the 590.

He also said it feels much smoother than a single 580, which comes to me as a huge surprise.
Actually none of this makes much sense. Money wasted to produce heat and noise, just to play console ports. But than maybe I am just sour having only space for 1 monitor, unless I remove the furnace.

At the resolution these people play at, 10fps make ALL the difference. Which is why they pay $700.

Well if you look at benchmarks it doesn't make sense. However owning the cards the actual experience proved otherwise. That is all I'm saying and by Kyle's experience it mimics what happened roughly a year ago. SSDD. 😉

My thoughts too...
for 709$ for the 6990, and your besically getting 2x 6970s.

The cheaper 6970s go for around 320$ so double up for crossfire would be 640$ (~60$ cheaper than the 6990).


On the other hand... 2x 580 in SLI are not much faster, and the cheapest 580 card is about 499$ (500$ x 2 = 1000$ for a cheap 580 SLI setup).

6990 is about ~300$ cheaper than the 580 SLI setup, and gives almost same performance at 2560x resolutions. Probably beating the 580 SLI at 5000x resolutions.

^above is apperntly enough to sell the 6990.

I think 2x 6970 is better though, they stay cooler, less noisy, and cost abit less and still give 580 SLI a run for the money.

Yeah but if you water cool you only need 1 $100 block vs. two for other solutions. This is why i bought 295 back in the day even though better values were out there dual carding.

I personally would not use any modern video card without water cooling - too much noise. Much better heat dissipation in 3x120mm rad with 1000rpm fans which is silent vs. 4500rpm+ whiners found on cards.

Anyway all sold out even with $50 newegg markups over MSRP.

That's why I bought the 6970, one card that can handle all that demanding console port graphics 😉. I really hope that BF3 is not a console port, if it is I'm not buying anymore video cards after that!

Priced around right.

6990 is less hassle to set up than 6970 XF. You don't need extra cables, and you don't need to worry whether or not it will fit your motherboard (PCI-E wise). 6970 XF costs $20 more + another $20-25 or so if you need a 10 inch X-Fire bridge.

That said 6990 is gonna suck balls when games don't support crossfire, it's gonna be worse than one 6950.

Heck my 460 handles everything I throw at it, I simply can't justify spending more on "more FPS".......

We are talking spending 100s on MINIMAL improvements and VERY little improvements in Graphics quality....as the graphics haven't really changed for # of years.

I'm actually surprised that Nvidia OR AMD are not REALLY struggling at this point.

Why do you keep insisting your gtx 460 runs everything maxed out? I had a gtx 460 1gb I just sold and it didn't max everything. Can you not understand while you may be just fine humming along at 30fps most of us aren't. I use a 120hz monitor and I like seeing 80fps minimum when possible. If I could buy a gtx 680 and get 10-15 more fps than the gtx 580 I'm using I'd buy it. Some people game with 3 or more monitors or on a ultra high resolution screen. There is a market and purpose for the high end cards or they wouldn't sell them.

There is plenty of room for image quality improvement from the settings that reviewers use, and it's not a small improvement either it's a huge improvement. When I spend "hundreds", I demand to have the best possible quality discernible to my eyes. Some will be satisfied with simple MSAA with no transparency, shimmering textures, and tearing frames, while some notice the difference and demand TRSSAA, high quality texture filtering, and 60 perfect full frames.

Your 460 might handle everything you throw at it the way you expect it to, not necessarily the way I expect it to.

To each their own, the market caters to everyone.

a) we probably play different games. so your requirements are different than mine.

b) if you can justify 10-15 FPS for $100s of dollars....more power to you. To me it doesn't make a difference, but I'm also a casual gamer so....

c) 3 monitor set up is worthless TO ME (again opinion). I would rather have 1 big screen vs 3 little screens with bezels.

Look, I've seen 3 monitor and even 30" 2560xXXXX monitor set ups running SLI 580. Graphic quality difference is MINIMAL at best.

It's a simple fact that Gaming industry has not reached any major Graphical milestones since original Crysis. We are stuck....so yes, it doesn't make a difference/sense to ME to spend all that money for VERY little improvement.

Once the next milestone is here....I might think about it. Meanwhile, you guys go ahead and spend $500-1000 on GPU set ups.

PS. I would rather put an extra payment towards my mortgage....
