That sounds about right for idle fan. What temps do you hit at load? You said you experienced throttling, so I assume it must have been over 90C.

Hmmm...too hot. Yes, unless you can get that fan to ramp up more, sounds like it's not the right card for your DC needs. I assume the card should go higher than 56% fan, but that's quite high already. Sunny would know more about how it performs and what the operating characteristics are in DC applications. I believe he has the same cooler/fan on his 5870.

assuming the brand/manufacturer does not matter - so long as the PCB and cooler are both a reference design - i see no reason why the blower shouldn't be able to exceed 56% (aside from the fact that an above average number of people have complaints about these particular 5870's).

as far as my own cooling setup goes, my video card did originally have the blower-style reference cooler, which i was able to set as high as 100% fan speed...it sounded like a vacuum cleaner, but it worked no problem. i'm now using an Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo Pro, which also goes to 100% fan speed without a problem...

...which brings me to why i asked the OP which version of MSI AB he's running - if the video card itself is not limited to a max of 56% fan speed, then perhaps a different version of MSI AB might solve some problems. i never had much luck myself with the public releases, so i use the beta versions. after having installed the latest beta version, and then making the appropriate tweaks to the MSIAfterburner.cfg file, its been clear sailing for me and my 5870. one thing to look out for though if you choose to give the beta a try - a message box might pop up one day out of the blue that says something about your version of MSI AB expiring soon. it is a consequence of running the beta software - b/c beta software is constantly being tested and revised, MSI frequently comes out with newer versions of the beta software. it is up to you, the end user, to heed the expiration warning and download & install the newest beta version when it becomes available...otherwise your current beta version will stop working. when this happens, another message box that appears to be a fatal/runtime/corrupt file error will pop up. do not freak out, as there are no such corrupt files - you just need to download and install the latest beta to get it working again. there is an option when uninstalling the previous beta version that allows you to save any profiles you might want to keep and load into the new install.

hmm...i'm still using v2.2.0 beta 9. its working fine, and i have yet to get a message about its expiration. nevertheless, i'll keep an eye out for it since beta 10 is now available.
