I'll give AMD the benefit of the doubt like I do all other possible FUD reports, but lets take these numbers:

100,000 5XXX units in first shipment

10% allocated for mainstream channel

4:1 5870 to 5850

Not good news for those looking for 5850s.

Seriously: how RETARDED one manager @ATI has to be to do this utter BS again?

I still hope sane people will win at ATI and cancel this BS with Dell.

Actually, it's the same source mentioned in the previous article. ;)

Do people buying Dell computers really buy high end vid cards when they order their computer? If anything they'd upgrade later on wouldn't they?? AND WHERE ARE THE BLOODY REVIEWS!!!! :|

Perhaps setting up agreements with companies like Dell has a significant impact on whether AMD/ATI can afford the continued R&D and manufacturing of so many new cards.

Perhaps AMD wants to try and translate the success of their GPUs over to the CPUs, and have dell offer them as a bundle.

No, not at all. It's retarded and ATI knows it, they just don't give a flying frog about you and me as soon as a check of one large start to take shape (even despite the fact they would make a lot more profit through retail sales)...

ATI and Dell already *&^%$ up a launch in the past this way.

Looks like 5870 ~ 50% better than 4870 in Far Cry 2, but 2X 5870 is barely faster than my current setup in Crysis.

hrm. Your setup = 2x 280s

2560 8xAA Veryhigh

2 x 5870 = 28 fps

2 x 285s = 16 fps

2 x 280s = ~ 14 fps

28 isn't exactly "barely" faster than 14...

Absolutely. People still buy Alienware, even though it's just a Dell. See also: XPS series. Dell's been wanting gaming cred for years.

No, they would not. The whole point of buying a Dell is you never want to open your computer case, upgrade your PSU (or *anything*), ever.

This is not an idiot move at all. The hotheads who want the card today will pay any premium, might as well have that premium go mostly to a vendor you can ask for concessions to move more of your product (read: CPUs).

And by the time the cards are available in the retail channel just in time for christmas you can still charge full MSRP since no doubt Dell will be marking these cards up at least $100-200 over MSRP in the meanwhile.

Win-win, except for the gotta have the epeen now crowd. But they're used to the early adopter tax anyway.

The enthusiasts are a fickle crowd, ready to abandon AMD at the first sign of a better product from their competitors. They don't owe that crowd a thing.

And why would you assume I game on that resolution? What % of people game at that resolution?

Are there actually people who buy cards based off resolutions other than that of which they play?

I am on 1080p. I qualified my post with "my setup" so people knew I wasnt making a general statement about the card.

No, you said "than your current setup", implying a 2x5870 ~= 2x280. We already know for current games at 1080p 2x280 is sufficient, and more GPU horsepower may not alleviate any bottlenecks. The fact remains, the 5870x2 can bring twice the computing resources to bear on some problems. And that may be important for people with more CPU firepower and/or bigger displays.

Exactly. They are basically equal, on my setup, in that game. I didnt get a chance to look at the others yet, but I own FC2 and Crysis, so I went to those first.

IMO it's going to be worth waiting for the DX11 cards. The Inquirer hinted today that the new AMD DX11 card will be faster than the NV GT300, and it should be out in a few months or so.

Ok, so the 5870 is $400 and I see it losing most of the time to the GTX 295 in Tom's review. I can get one of those for $465 right now. So while the 5870 might be a slightly better deal than the 295, I really don't see ATI gaining ground with these cards. Anyone else noticing this?

It was temporary issue. It's up and running now.
