ATI 5770 or NVidia GTS250 for my i5-750?

Hi, I'd like to build a mid range gaming machine. I plan on having:

4gb ram
i5 750
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD2

I don't plan on doing CFX or SLI so the UD2's inability to SLI is irrelevant.
Are either of these video cards 'overkill' for my configuration? If not, which one would everyone suggest? They look roughly the same as far as price, which is the only thing I know how to go by. :$

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

The 250 is like 40-50 dollars cheaper than the 5770 so I guess it depends on which you can afford. I doubt the 5770 is going to be rocking full dx11 games whenever they come out so whichever one gives the performance level you want/can afford go for.

you have a good platform so I would get a much better card then either one of those if you are at 1680 or higher.

Cheapest gts 250 1gb on Newegg is 124$.
Cheapest 5770 is 152$.

A 5770 is much faster then a gts 250 for 27$ more and when overclocked can match a gtx 260.

the gtx260 is still usually a bit better overall if you turn on AA especially in regards to min framerates. I do agree the 5770 would be the better choice over the gts250 though.

Well I'm comming from a gtx 260 to a 5750 (when overclocked to 910 1350) I can attest that my gtx 260 was still a little faster at stock. There are a few games where the 260 was outright faster (Crysis and Warhead), but with Far Cry 2 my 5750 overclocked beat my 260.
5770's should generally overclock to 960, 1375 and 1000 1400 with a voltage bump.

But my gtx 260 also overclocked past gtx 275 speeds.

I dont see anyway your 5750 could be better than a gtx260 in Far Cry2. here the gtx260 is way faster than even the 5770 and looks to be about 40% faster than a 5750 at 1680 and 45% faster at 1920.. http://techreport.com/articles.x/17747/6

Well on my system my overclocked 5750 beat my gtx 260.

I have the benchmarks for my 5750 right here. Written down on scratch paper.
All settings high @ 1600x1200.

Overclocked 910 1350
MIn72.78
Avg 94.94
Max 118.13

Stock 5750
min 65.55
avg 78.11
Max 98,97

Preety good jump ha? 16 fps on the avg.

Mabe your right about the aa/af, I don't use it.

what are the exact settings you are using? I dont think I can get remotely close to those numbers with my gtx260 even at 1680. of course some of it is my dual core compare to your quad.

I would certainly turn on at least 2x AA in this game as you have plenty of performance for it. I dont usually bother with AA but this game needs it bad as the grass looks horrible without it.

Also consider one of the former variants of the 250's G92 chip such as the 8800GT/GTS 512 or 9800s. You can get those significantly cheaper and get performance roughly on par with the 250.
As for ATI you might want to consider the 4850, 4860, or 4870 if you can find them cheaper than the 5770. Performance wise these ATI cards should be superior to the G92s, but it may be hard to find since they are EOL. 4870 is roughly equivalent to the 5770 but lacks some of the features(eyefinity, DX11) and runs much hotter.

5750 Card @ stock.

wow I cant even come close to that but its mainly my cpu at fault. I get the same numbers at 1920 as I do even at 1280. its pretty bad when an E8500 at 3.8 is bottlenecking a gtx260.

Toyota ,remember I had a e8400 @ 3.6?
You should try to get a q9xxx bro. It is worth it.
Sold my e8400 for 100$ shipped and picked up my used q9550 for 150$.

Edit : i just sold my other 5750.(I had crossfire to try it) .... I might try a 5770 ,5750 combo. :)

still waiting for BFG10K to chime in and tell us how even his E6850 lowered to 2.0 is not a bottleneck with even a 5870. he even claims that nonsense for Far Cry 2. lol. even at 1920 with very high settings and 2x AA I get 40% increase in average and 58% increase in minimum framerates by running my E8500 at 3.8 instead of 2.0. clearly going to a quad would help even more in this and several other games.
