Is there an estimated RELEASE date for either yet? That's my dilemma... I want a card now but am willing to wait a bit. And I don't want to spend more than $175 (guess I'm looking at the PRO variant)

The estimate for the Pro variant (with GDDR3) is sometime this month. GDDR5 variants aren't expected to be released until next month or even July because of the availability of GDDR5 memory.

I keep hearing May 20th for the official announcement and release, but June and July for volume availability, especially for the GDDR5 variants.

Got any sources? Thanks..

If the release was May 20th, I think we'd hear some concrete info on the specs by now, and probably some leaked benches as well.

Nothing concrete, Fudzilla, wikipedia, few others. Like I said, I keep hearing May 20th for the launch, but nothing solid.

You can be this close to release of a new product and have no benchmarks leaked, its happened in the past. We've got plenty of leaked spec's though.

Yes!!!! Very strange, even if middle of June, I would have expected something by now. But no stories of needing a respin either? Makes me wonder if the 4800 even exists. Nvda suggesting they will release info about their new card before release, does support the idea of a fast amd card coming............... but?

edit: If May 20, 2008, I would expect pictures of boxes with nice girls on them by now.

AMD has done this before though. How much fan faire was there for the 3000 series, or the 9700 Pro? They came out of no where. When a company wants to, they can keep the lid on tight until the official launch.

R770 to launch in the last week of June

AMD plans to show off its RV770XT and PRO cards at Computex, but it won't launch it until late June.

We've learned that AMD plans a launch and retail /etail availability of RV770XT and PRO based products in the last week of June.

We've told you before that the real retail availability is planned for Q3 2008 and Q3 as you might know will start with the first day of July. If AMD decided to launch the card at Computex, the retail cards would follow after three weeks and the company doesn?t want that.

Nvidia set up a launch and the availability rule and ATI obeys it.

Behind closed doors at Computex

RV770 GDDR5 to sample soon

RV770PRO with GDDR3 has been sampled a few weeks ago and AMD is about to sample RV770XT cards with GDDR5 memory.

As we said before RV770XT will end up as the faster from two and it has the 512bit memory support. Naturally, RV770XT is bigger and hotter than its predecessor, the RV670XT, but at the same time, it will end up significantly faster.

It will have a bigger cooler and of course it supports DirectX 10.1 and its developed in 55nm. Remember this is a mainstream/performance product and it won?t be that expensive.

yeah, remember that they used first silicon for 3870's launch. they caught nvidia with their pants down, forcing the paper launch and, later, the cooling issues of the stock hsf that plague 8800gt to this day.

8800GT wasn't a paper launch... it was just way too good performance vs price that supply doesn't meet demand...

and it was released before 3870 if I remember correctly...

That is correct but originally the 3870 was supposed to launch first then nvidia caught wind of it and launched the 8800GT before supplies were even close to ready.

pure assumption? how did you know they didn't plan for it? 8800GT supply wasn't bad at all... the demand was just too great due to price/performance...

Old report about 8800GT release date being moved forward.

The 3870 was the only reason why they launched the 8800GT almost a full month early.

nVidia was likely targeting G92 for a November or December launch.... remember RV670 was rumored to come in Q1 2008 initially, it got pushed up to Q4 2007.

It was originally meant for november but launched october. I can't explain the ATI launch though other than they just felt the need to put something on the market.

ATI launched late because they were releasing 2 products at the same time... actually.. its a whole new generation that they were releasing, that is why they need more time to prepare.

Nvidia on the other hand, was only releasing a refresh.. so they can release it earlier.

Neither are paper launch. 8800 just sold more due to better performance per buck...

Oh, I wasn't saying it was a paper launch.

Was just trying to say the reason for that was because they moved the launch date forward to beat the 3870 out of the gate.

lol oh got it

actually, not really.. 8800 was on shortage for about 3 month... nvidia still doesn't have its own plant?..

No idea, but I would of believed that if they stuck their original release date they shortages would be been reduced by at least a month lol.
