gtx 280 will be 1gb and 4870 should have a similar amount of bandwidth, so I think that 1gb is justified in this case. Obviously it won't be needed for power users like me who game at 14x9, but nitro or bfg-type users with 30" monitors should actually see quite a bit of benefit this time around from the added memory.
I think BFG has a 19" CRT- he hates LCDs.
I agree that 1GB memory with more bandwidth should be a big plus for me.
oops, I forgot about that...
AMD has more problem going to 1gb with ddr5 for obvious reasons, though as ddr5 availability improves we might see more of them come out.
Assuming that the 4870 will be only a little faster than a 8800GTS, I'd say anyone that wants to play games on a large LCD +24", with very high resolutions, should consider buying a GTX280 or GTX260 with 1GB RAM.
Of course the 4780 will benefit from 1GB especially with newer games+high res, but not as much as a GT200 based card.
I think that is a real underestimate of the 4870's performance; from what we know, it should be an easy 2x the performance of the HD 3870. The 8800GTS is maybe 50% faster, a bit more at most, but not even close to 2x. The HD 4870 should be considerably faster than any G92 right now, and unless the 55nm refresh includes higher clocks, I don't see how it could establish parity either.
Once again you can't compare RV770 to GT200, they are not competitors. GTX 260 will be $449, GTX 280 $649. The 4870 is $329. Of course the GT200 parts will be better @ 1920x1200+. How GTX 280 and HD 4870 X2 will compare is the question, and we don't have an answer yet. From what the inquirer is spewing lately, it seems R700 may win. But I'm not so sure.
