no.... an upstanding news service such as fudzilla did not respond to your corrections about their articles being completely and utterly wrong? where have the days of journalistic integrity gone to! (I am making fun of fud, not of you)

I read on Nordic Hardware (I think) that the 4870X2 and the 4650 are scheduled for release in August.

4850 will be sub $200 very quickly I suspect. if not, get an 8800gt.

Obviously it won't be needed for power users like me who game at 14x9, but nitro or bfg-type users with 30" monitors should actually see quite a bit of benefit this time around from the added memory.

I think BFG has a 19" CRT- he hates LCDs.

I agree that 1GB memory with more bandwidth should be a big plus for me.

oops, I forgot about that...

AMD has more problem going to 1gb with ddr5 for obvious reasons, though as ddr5 availability improves we might see more of them come out.

I think that it's not quite a new architecture but also it is more then a simple rehash. It looks like they've taken the 3870 architecture and added more stream processors and added some power where the 2900/38x0 lacked it, doubled it's texture abilities. Also now the stream processors run at a higher speed then the rest of the core. And GDDR3 and 5 support. So, I guess it's kind of like going from a 6800GT to a 7900GT... same basic building blocks, but pretty heavily tweaked. At least that's the way I'm reading into it, someone more knowledgeable will correct me if I'm wrong, I'm sure. :)

Assuming that the 4870 will be only a little faster than a 8800GTS, I'd say anyone that wants to play games on a large LCD +24", with very high resolutions, should consider buying a GTX280 or GTX260 with 1GB RAM.

Of course the 4780 will benefit from 1GB especially with newer games+high res, but not as much as a GT200 based card.

I think that is a real underestimate of the 4870's performance; from what we know, it should be an easy 2x the performance of the HD 3870. The 8800GTS is maybe 50% faster, a bit more at most, but not even close to 2x. The HD 4870 should be considerably faster than any G92 right now, and unless the 55nm refresh includes higher clocks, I don't see how it could establish parity either.

Once again you can't compare RV770 to GT200, they are not competitors. GTX 260 will be $449, GTX 280 $649. The 4870 is $329. Of course the GT200 parts will be better @ 1920x1200+. How GTX 280 and HD 4870 X2 will compare is the question, and we don't have an answer yet. From what the inquirer is spewing lately, it seems R700 may win. But I'm not so sure.

The 8800GTS is at best 10% faster than the 8800GT which is 15% faster average than the HD 3870. Even if the GT200 wins, it's overcomed by it's terrible heat dissipation and power consumption, very low yields and poor performance per dollar, will make the HD 4870 more attractive. It's like now, even though we all know that the HD 3870 is slower than the 8800GT, looks more attractive to buy than we can say, the HD 2900XT against the old 8800GTS 640.

If it's shipping then why are there no benchmarks by now? If the 4000 series was really that good you'd think AMD would've leeked some benchmarks.

They've done this kind of thing before, usually when they don't want a competitor to know exactly what they've got.

If they are actually shipping to stores - expect benchmarks soon. Encouraging if true, that the 4850 can compete at the $200 level well enough for a "sizeable" launch. Looks like war on the horizon.

And this is one war where I would vote to stay in!

My PM's are falling on deaf ears/ Blind eye's!!

In one article they stated HD4850 would be $229 and HD4870 would be $339. Now they keep stating HD4870 at $229. I would assume the R770Pro would be the HD4850, and I doubt it will be any competition for the 9800GTX...I think the R770XT is the HD4870, which should take on the 9800GTX.

I wish the HD4870 was $229, then I would most likely get 2 of them for crossfire at $460, as opposed to a single GTX 280 for $650. But dual HD4870 at $339 a piece wouldn't be such a great deal. I pretty much refuse to buy an nForce motherboard though.

My thoughts exactly. If they're $280 or lower, I'm leaning towards two 4870's. At $339 or more I'm leaning towards a single GTX 280. Benchies and prices please surface!

4850 is supposed to be equal to 9800GTX. 4870 30% faster than 9800GTX. We'll see soon enough if that's the case.

and 280GTX more then 100% faster than a 9800GTX...

Ofcourse, only time will tell if any of those "supposed to" actually come to be.
