I have a 4870 currently running at 1680 x 1050 res. Playing Age of Conan with all maxed settings I am getting b/w 40-90 fps depending on where I am.

I want to upgrade to a 24 inch monitor. Can a single 4870 support 1920 x 1200 with a demanding game like AOC or will I need another card for crossfire?

1 4870 should be just fine. Only in the most memory intensive situations is the 4870 challenged at 1920 x 1200.

Im playing with a 4850 at 1920x1200 with most games maxed out so your 4870 will more than fine...

Good to hear this - the memory size issue is the only thing putting me off the HD4870 and moving towards a GTX260. I was hoping that the 1GB versions of the HD4870 would be relesed yesterday, but as of yet there is no new info regarding an actual release date. My main concern is that at that resolution, new games over the next few years will cause the card to struggle a little.

i need another one for my 19x12 LCD .. actually i am planning on an X3 solution for max filtering on any game.

it depends on what you like and how much AA you use. You need to remember that even more demanding games are coming out; more so than Crysis - which still cannot be played at Very High at 19x12

Wow, and I though a single 4870X2 was going to be overkill at 1920x1200! Should be quite the FPS beast once you have it assembled.

I just thought of something, though. The 4870X2 has 1GB of framebuffer per GPU, while your 4870 has only 512mb. Since each card has to store identical data for each GPU, you're basically going to be limited to 512mb per GPU, aren't you? The additional 512mb per GPU on the 4870X2 might not be used when paired with a 512mb 4870. And with only a 512mb framebuffer per GPU, you might run into performance dropoffs at high resolutions + AA or games utilizing 512mb+ of video memory.

You might need to pick up a 1GB 4870 in order to fully maximize Crossfire performance with a 4870X2. Of course I'm not sure about this, but it seems logical.

Just a thought.

i know about the framebuffer .. i do not think it is such a big issue if i stick to 19x12. But then it would be good to review the differences.

Of course, i will start "slow" and stick my 4870x1 in my 4XPCIe slot and the 4870x2 into the 16x PCIe slot and run the benches. After i upgrade my MB [to X38?], i will report on the difference with 16x + 16x and THEN consider replacing my 4870/512MB with a 1GB 4870 in the 2nd slot. Might as well find out.

No worries, i will link you to my article :D

You probably will not need an extra card if you don't run AA at 1920, as additional cards only give you "free AA". AoC is CPU bottlenecked so you will not see higher FPS than what you are seeing until we see faster CPUs or engine improvements.

Free AA up to 8x @ 1920 and 2560 in AoC (aka CPU bottlenecking)

i could use a lil more power to play WiC at 19x12 w/ 4xAA all other settings maxed out in some settings with a 4870

i do get dips during nukes. some maps are higher FPS than others. the seattle map can dip into the high 20's during intense gameplay. most other maps are just fine though staying over 30fps no matter what.
