I've been struggling with this new 9600xt and 2D....I used to own a V5, 5500 that was able to output 1280x1024x32 @ 120Hz refreshrate and it looked beautiful. I can take a camera to it, look through the lense to see how fast the screen flashing really is. It was slllllllllllow. Ever since I upgraded to 9600xt, I can no longer do this refreshrate, I can only do 1280x1024x32 @ 100Hz refreshrate. Now, on paper this isn't alot, and with the old v5, it wasn't. But, with the new card it's night and day! I took my camera to it and I can clealy see the screen flash...you know like the monitors you see on weather channel where they have a couple of monitors flashing in the background...well that's low refresh rates.

I'm using a Sony CPD-G500, which XP found no problem, so I'm guessing it's got to be the 9600xt, made by ATI. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

3DFX's 2D was top notch. I beleive that's why NVidia grabbed them. Matrox is hard to beat as well but every since ATI bought out TSeng Labs years ago they have been in the hunt so I suspect that it's the Monitor that doesn't support that refresh rate but worked with the 3DFX

Wow I can see 60Hz compared to 100Hz making a difference. But I wouldn't notice 100-120Hz. What refresh rates does your monitor inf file support?
Use powerstrip set the refresh

actually, my monitor supports that refresh rate and much more! :(

I was having a problem after I installed my new ATI card where it wouldn't stay at higher than 60hz refresh. PowerStrip could lock it (though you have to pay for it...), and eventually I fixed it by doing, uh, something in the driver panels. I think it didn't know what kind of monitor it was, and was defaulting back to 60Hz for everything. I mucked around with some of the advanced monitor settings down in the ATI panels, and it works fine now. Just wish I remember exactly what I did... maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling the monitor .inf?

If it's *noticeably* flickering, you're not at 100hz. 100hz flicker is very subtle, even through a camera (since it should be refreshing several times per LCD refresh).

that's what I thought and seen with my v5 :( but with this new card, it flickers like crazy...like at 60Hz

I'll look around in the setting, but I'm pretty sure I combed through all of them ;(

Much more then 120Hz @ 1280x1024x32 ? Damn I wouldn't mind one cause my Mitsubishi will only do 85Hz @ that resolution.

Anyways I just checked and I beg to differ

What you're seeing is caused by a principle of physics, although I can't remember what it's called right now. It has to do with the ratio of the refresh rate of your monitor and the refresh rate of the LCD on your camera. Don't worry about it.

Do you ever think you've got too much time on your hands? 85HZ is plenty for anyone.

I use a 9800 and everytime I update the driver, I have to set the refresh rate in 2 places to get it to work properly. I assume that you have the ATI control panel and correct monitor inf installed. Set the refresh rate in the Monitor tab 1st, then you must also set it in the Display tab, monitor button; this is what I always have to do, otherwise it stays at 60hz.

Is it an LCD? I don't believe refresh rates matter for an LCD.

Go to advanced display properties, and to the "displays" tab>Uncheck "use DDC information" > enter the maximum values your monitor supports in each of the 2 drop down boxes, >OK >OK >OK see if that don't help.

Beg to differ all you want, but that's a 120KHz monitor. A 19" 110KHz supports 1280x1024@100Hz, so I think it's possible for his 21" to support the res at 120Hz. Not "much more" as he's saying but still. :)

why should I trust a website run by a 14 yr old when I can trust my manual? :D

Glad that you got it working right. I recently used a 9600XT in a new build machine and it looked real good in 2D/3D as does my 9800. Good luck with the new card!

My V3 2000 PCI had great 2D, up to 1600x1200@85Hz it was better (on the desktop anyway, not video playback) than my Radeon cards, and they have excellent 2D.
