I have an ASUS P5K
4 GIGS Crucial 1066 MHZ High Performance DDR2
Core 2 Extreme QX6700 2.66 GHZ Quad Core 1066 MHZ processor,
and an ATI RADEON 2900XT 512 MB RAM.
Very High-End system.

I received the 1 long, 3 short beep from the MB at initial boot.
No video card signal.
I had an ASUS EAX 1300 128 MB to test the board, and it worked fine,
allowing me to install VISTA, etc.
I, and MWAVE's TECH support, figured a DOA ATI Video Card.
The replacement arrived and I get the same signal/problem.
I tried it in both PCI-E 16X slots...no signal either slot.

I tried it with only 1 GIG of RAM. Still nothing.
I tried it with or without the power cable.

Mwave Tech support and I are stumped. Is there some type of compatibility issue with the above that I'm unaware of?
Seems VERY odd that the board, processor and memory work fine with a $50.00 video card and not a $400.00 Card.

With the cheap V.Card in, I was able to access the BIOS. I saw nothing that
I'm aware of that I should change for the video card.
Tech support suggested trying another card; an eVGA/NVidea chipset.
I have no idea...can't imagine 2 DOA V.Cards, but what else?

Any thought or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ray

That's where I would start looking. Chances of two dead cards in a row are remote.

What is your Power Supply Make and Model?

Try the new card in another machine. It's pretty unlikely to get two bad video cards in a row, but it's possible. I have gotten 2 bad motherboards in a row, however the RMA rate for motherboards is way higher than video cards. BTW, the temporary video card you used was PCI-e right? So you can eliminate the PCI-e slot?

EDIT: I think if the power supply is bad it would just shut down or crash out of Windows, I doubt you would get the bad video card beeps.

That's correct. Back-up Vidoe Card is a PCI-E, also.
670 Watt Power Supply, also noew.
doubt that is it, especially since the system starts correctly with another Video Card,
but I don't know what else to try.

Most of ATi cards I had would not boot for various reasons
7200 AGP 2x/4x 64MB - wouldn't boot on AGP2x mobo
9700 Pro: would not cold boot on intel 865PE mobo, nForce3
X1950 Pro: would not cold boot on nForce3

....

Holy Crap! You bought a $52 PSU for your quad core rig!?!

http://www.mwave.com/mwave/vie...a=BA23839&RSKU=BA23839

I have an ASUS P5K
4 GIGS Crucial 1066 MHZ High Performance DDR2
Core 2 Extreme QX6700 2.66 GHZ Quad Core 1066 MHZ processor,
and an ATI RADEON 2900XT 512 MB RAM.
Very High-End system.

I don't mean to be rude, but get rid of that PSU as fast as you can. Never skimp on the power supply.

I would suggest something closer to the $200 range from either PC Power & Cooling, Fortron Source, OCZ, or SilverStone. A good recommended list is here: http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103

Anandtech just did a review of the PCP&C 750 Silencer http://anandtech.com/casecooli...howdoc.aspx?i=3040&p=1

http://jonnyguru.com/ has a lot of good info as well.

now that I have gotten over my shock... welcome to AT forums :)

After reading about that Power Supply I would have to agree, ditch it ASAP. I still doubt that a PSU problem would cause the mobo to believe the video card is missing or bad as the beeps indicate. But since it is such a piece of crap you should defiantly replace it first and see how it goes.

A Video card which needs only a fraction of the power required to run a 2900XT. I hope you didn't think they used the same amount of power?

That Power Supply isn't feeding enough juice to that 2900XT to even let it post, hence the one long, three short post beeps. Methinks that PSU's ratings are a little "inflated".

Keys appears to have it right

something really simple but - do you have the correct 6-pins covered on the 2900XT's 8-pin connector?
[both pciE power cords plugged firmly in?]

This may be it right here:
BOTH the power supplies on this video card?
I thought it was either or...Both?
I don't believe that this P.S. has both.
I'll have to let you know.
Thanks!

It's also a good idea to flash your motherboard BIOS to the latest version.

Yes both, and your PSU did have two 6pin PCI-E power connectors, one of the plugs on the 2900XT is for an 8pin power connector, but you only need that for overclocking, the 6pin connector should also fit in that plug (in only one way). And that definatly could be it. Regardless get rid of that PSU ASAP, it's a real liability. Looks like the company may be belly up as well.

If you don't have a 6-pin and an 8-pin, plug in two 6-pin connectors... The 8-pin plug is keyed, so you can only plug in the 6-pin plug one way.

Thanks to you, and to 'apoppin' for pointing me in the correct direction.
Not ashamed to admit that I DID NOT KNOW!
I only had the 6-pin; thought it was either/or.
Plugged in the 2nd 6 into the 8, and, Vista is installing as we speak.
I don't come here often, but when I do, I always leave happy!
Thanks to all, including the advice on upgrading this power supply.

Sounds like he's still using that POS PSU though :(

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby for the first time that ATi card ramps to 3D...
