AthlonXP 1700 w/ PC2100 Vs. P4 2.53 w/ PC2100

I have the opportunity to obtain a 2.53 P4, an intel D845EBT mobo, and WinXP pro, for $175. The only real problem is that the mobo only suports PC2100. I already hav 768mgs of PC2100, which is nice, but i am worried the p4's insane need for bandwidth will not be filled by lowly PC2100. So, i guess the question is, will the P4 and pc2100 be an improvement from my athlon rig??

thanks

Edit: right, im aware that the chipset itself will support ddr333 unofficially, but im assuming since its an intel board, there will be no option for it in the bios.

Oh yes it sure will. Oh yes. Also, that chipset does support DDR333 unofficially. It's not official at all but it will work. You'll definitely see a huge performance boost.

At the priced it's a screaming bargain so that's hard to turn down. However, I don't think you'll ever see the performance difference. It probably depends on what you do with the computer and which motherboards you would be using. The PC2100 will cripple the P4. It depends on application but my guess is it will overall perform like a Athlon 2100+ or 2200+. Thats more than you have but not much. My rule of thumb is that if the clock speed/architecture of the chip isn;t doubled, the performance is not remarkably different. For office applications and internet, you would never see the difference. Games you might see some difference but in reality, the video card is much more important.

If I were you I'd buy it, do some bargain shopping, and end up with two PCs.

I can see a HUGE difference between my XP 1700+ and 1.6a@2133mhz. This is using slower memory too. If you would notice a difference going from your current system to an Athlon XP 2400+ then you'll notice the difference here too.

Hmm, it seems like i should prolly buy this even if i decide not to use it myself. Does anybody know if this board WILL allow me to run DDR333?? I almost think the intel bios wouldnt allow it, since its not "official." Anyway, if i cant, then i would need a different mobo at some time. Does anybody have a good recommendation for a decent ddr333 board with good overclocking?? Or should i wait for some kind of dual-ddr solution to come around like granite bay,and then upgrade? How far off is that???

Thanks again,
Butch

Even with "only" DDR266 you'll definitely see a large performance difference between the two systems.
