I'm currently running my X1800XL at 675/675 and get a hair over 10,000 on 3DMark05 with my Athlon64 at 2.5ghz. I usually stay 4-6 months behind on getting a new 3D card to save money and will probably pick up an 8800 or the next gen ATI card sometime in spring of 2007. My brother is looking to upgrade his Athlon 1800+ and I was thinking of selling him my mobo/CPU/RAM to help him out and so I can upgrade. However, I'm wondering how much of an increase I'll see going from my current CPU to a Conroe overclocked to 3ghz+? I mainly play Oblivion, Heroes of Might and Magic 5 and GTA San Andreas. I'll be picking some new games up, but not in the near future, as the OOO 1.3 mod for Oblivion is keeping me pretty happy. I play Oblivion now at 1600x1200, 4xAF, 2xAA, all high but no grass.

With that, how much faster will my games, especially Oblivion, play with the upgraded CPU?

Thanks!

For gaming, you won't see a huge difference.

There will be an improvement, but i wouldn't expect anything huge.

For pretty much everything else though, it should be a huge upgrade.

As example is for me, video encoding is roughly 80-95% faster on my E6400 @ 3.4 GHz than my previous Opteron 165 @ 2.6 GHz.

If you have $ to burn, get Geforce 8 for an improvement in gaming.

Core2duo is faster, but at 1600x1200 with AA enabled you are almost always gpu limited (besides minimum framerates which rely on cpu). But if you want to help your brother out, then it's worth it :)

You won't see any improvement in gaming @ 1600x1200, except in Oblivion (and that's only with an X1950XTX or 7950X2). Of course, if you put in a bit extra, and get an X1900XT or better, then you'll be very happy with the difference, although most of the difference will be from the video card.

A 256MB X1900XT is about twice as fast as an X1800XL. Then, in the games that aren't gpu limited, you'll have that covered, too. It's a shame you have to take advantage of your brother like that, though. J/k, he'll be very happy with his upgrade, too.

You get 10000+ with a X1800XL in 3D Mark 05, I get about the same with a 1900XTX, how can you get these high scores? The settings you play Oblivion is high even for a 1900xt, how is that possible?

10k sounds about right when my X1900XT got 12k and my voltmodded 7900GT got 11k. Sounds like the master of overclocking doesn't have a clue.

ROFL If he was the Master of OC'ing, then he should be able to figure out why his system is studdering  Or at least learn how to patch games.

Not really. Well, the X1800XL I jumped on was the MSI deal for $199 they had a few months ago which really was an X1800XT 512mb with a sticker over the HSF. A quick bios flash and I had an X1800XT. However, after benchmarking, the X1800XL BIOS was actually MORE stable than the XT and it let me overclock it just as high. I run it at 675/675 (500/500 stock for an XL) with the fan at 40% but I can crank it over 700mhz easy but would rather have a quieter system.

If you check my Heat you'll see I sold an X1900XT 512MB to purchase the X1800XL. I lost a little over 1000 points in 3DMark and dropped from 2048x1536 to 1600x1200 in Oblivion.
