Athlon Xp runs....a little hot ?

Hi guys and happy new year 2005 🙂

Ok , i have a question about an Athlon XP 1900 + temps here

My friend wanted me to check his comp to see what kind of PSU , MOBO , CPU ect ect ect he had in it

The comp is an Athlon XP 1900 + , 512 MB , Geforce 4 MX 440 and some kinf of Asus mobo.

Anyway , i ran everest and to my big surprise it showed CPU at 52c Idle !!!

Now , i never had an Athlon XP but i have heard that AMD had heat problems in the past so is it normal for an XP chip to run that hot ? Personally , i think not , especially considering that my A64 run at 28c Idle.I am not sure though and thats why i ask here.

He want to get a 9800 Pro to put in that rig but i am afraid that the heat of the card + heat of CPU underload might overheat his chip.

Any advice is welcome 🙂

If he's using the stock AMD heatsink and fan, those temps are fine. The XP chips can handle up to 80-90C and I wouldn't even worry unless the 100% load temps get above 60C. Improving case airflow, using thermal paste instead of the pad, and/or getting a better HS and fan would certainly help, but not necessary.

Thanks for the fast reply

80 - 90 c ??!! Really ?? Are you serious ???!

I knew about the AMD heat problems of the past but i never thought that it was that bad lol

And yes he is using the stock HS

I was almost certain that his temps were too hot

Well , now that i know , ill probably tell him to get that 9800 Pro (or 6600 GT that i recommend him but for some mysterious and incomprehensible reasons he is fixed on the idea of getting a 9800 Pro -_-)

AMD XP Specifications

Of course, you wouldn't want to run the chip at 80C-90C, but that's the max die temperature stated in the specification link above. I personally would look at better cooling if the load temperature gets above 60C but your friend shouldn't experience any instability because of those temps.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it, if you're stable, chances are you're fine. Pain is the AXP's middle name 🙂

It is a palomino core. Those things were very hot running. Dont worry about it, it should be fine as it is.

It could be Thoroughbred. But i would venture to think it is Palamino as well.

Palaminos are slow and hot, you would see a temp drop with a Thoroughbred Rev A or B or even better a Barton.

Did you check to see if the cooler is clogged with dust?
