All right I?m having a strange problem with my computer. I tried upgrading my 1.4 thunderbird to an 1800 xp and it was a little weird about accepting it at first but then I reset the bios and it detected. So I got into windows and everything was awesome until I tried running 3dmark 2002 to test it out at which point it froze and threw one of those blue screen of hate at me I tried the program that comes with the omega drivers too the fractal thing and that did it too. I restarted played and with my bios setting a bunch of times and nothing fixed it. It always gives me a different message when it goes to the bsod and seems to be fine until I try to do anything with it. The other processor runs fine it in the computer and now I?m stumped and don't know what to do. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks
-Ryan

Are you using the latest bios for your board? Checked for heat problems? How are the voltages for all the rails looking?

Couple problems: 1) there is not 3dmark 2002 2) "Lenny" is an aweful name for a computer! :p :D

Seriously though, do what Dap suggests, especially the BIOS,

Agreed. Especially the 5+ rail. However, the old 1.4gig T-bird was pretty power hungry, so if you are'nt/were'nt having a problem while it was installed, maybe you got a bad chip.

I'd guess it's overheating. Check to ensure that you don't have the heatsink on backwards.

alright the bios is up to date. The cpu runs at 65C when i start the computer up which seems kinda high to me System temp is 20C. Voltages are

Vcore - 1.74
Vagp - 1.53
5 - 4.89
12 - 11.97
Vio - 3.23
Vdimm - 2.56

i'm gonna try my another heat sink see if that'll fix it.

*edit* tried the other one ran at like 56 at boot and after it froze i rebooted and checked and it was at 62ish and
The heatsink is on the right way.

The 8K3A+ is known for giving honest CPU temperatures instead of candy-coated artificially-low ones. 65C is cause for concern on some mobos but probably not an 8K3A+. Do ensure that your heatsink's stepped end is matched up to the raised end of the CPU socket, of course. I can post a pic later if you need one.

edit: let me add that the Thunderbird does not have an on-core thermal diode, and the AthlonXP does. For this reason, your TBird reading would be derived from an inaccurate socket thermistor, while your AthlonXP temp is coming straight from the on-core diode.

What you need to buy.
That would be a step down from a nice Cheiftec case with 400w Antec IMHO.

All your voltages are short, I suspect power supply. Try upping the voltages for your cpu, AGP, ram etc.

well oddly enough switching heatsinks seems to have fixed the problem...well something at least, i have no idea what happened but after switching heatsinks and playing with it for awhile it just works now. I ran 3d marks for like an hour and the fractal thing for another hour and it stayed up fine. Could have been my ps i dunno, if it starts crashing again i'll probably switch it out for another one or something. Thanks for all the help guys.

oh and on a side note 3d mark 2002 is a sad result of my lack of typing skills combinded with the unfamilarity of the laptop keyboard and Lenny is the coolest name for a computer ever. Oh no not Lenny!! not Lenny!!

Punisher, airflow is more important to some of us than looks...;) I'll take a case with two 120mm fans anyday over a case that looks cool, and fries my cpu.
I agree the air flow is very important but a Cheiftech most assuredly has it as well. The full and Mid-towers I have used have 80mm fans so they won't be as quite as 120mm but the full tower allows 4 fans, the mid 3, and combine that with the 2 fan Antec PSU and my cases have always stayed nice and cool. In fact the Cheiftechs I use are the same case as the Antec performance II and Plusview LE so they're nice cases. I've always liked having the front HDD cage fan double as a HDD cooler too :) Anywho, looks like he's straightened out so we're just shootin' the bull at this point brudda

Well, Punisher, I had to assume that since everything in his Chieftec case is about 2+ years old, that his case more than likely wasn't one of the new Chieftec's! Oh, and the case that I gave the link for is the same case that I have, and it also has the hard-drives in front of that 120mm fan, along with a removable 5-disc hd cage. But, like you said, you and I are just shooting the sh*t now, since he's already solved his problem...:D
