Athlon XP 2600+ overclocks well only with extreme cooling?

Athlon XP 2600+ Review

Is it me or does it take watercooling to overclock this cpu by 300 mhz? Reading from toms review, it seems kinda absurd that they claim this cpu is a good overclocker only by using water cooling or ice cooling and a whopping 2.2 volts of vcore. Or did i miss something? I don't know about you but i would take the northwood and aluminum heatsink any day if the athlon needs this extreme cooling.

Both amdmb.com and hardocp got 300Mhz oc's with standard cooling.

But wasn't amdmb.com the site that got like 2300mhz out of their 1800mhz T-bred a few months ago, when all of the other sites could only get ~1900mhz?

WingnutPEZ can you help me understand why the extra layer of interconnects helps with power consumption and allows more scaling? I know your Intel and all, but the principles should be the same.

While you're at it, can you also explain why you prefer Intel over AMD? I've read tons of articles about why people prefer AMD over Intel, but I can't remember reading one that explains why Intel is better than AMD. On AMD's site, I found links to benchmarks on web pages... Intel's site seems as backwards to me as Microsoft's

After reading Hardocp's article, it restored my faith in amd. Lets just hope the 2400+ overclocks better than the 2600+ or that most of the 2600+ can get 333mhz fsb thru lowering the multiplier; seeing from the benches, i think a 2600+ with 333mhz fsb & 333mhz ddr or higher will beat the northwood 2.53b.

Two things that AMD did to the T-bred 'B'...

Adding the ninth metal layer allowed them to optimize the speed paths better. Basically, making the paths between the logic gates (arranged transistors) in a more efficient way. (Something along "a straight line being the shortest path..." theory.)

They also added transistors to make capacitors to help in dealing with EMI in the metal layers. EMI became much more of an issue with the compaction to .13µ.

Jeff, I guess your question is in reference to my sig? My sig is like that because I'm employed by Intel.

Otherwise... If you are asking me to promote Intel (like some sales guy), then you are asking the wrong guy. I've never done that here, and I'm not going to start now.

If I'm completely off base, please re-phrase your question, as I have no idea what you are asking.
