Athlon XP 2500+ overclocking with only PC2700 ram.

My cousin has an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton that I know could easily reach a 200fsb oveclock but he only has PC2700 Ram(333mhz). If he overclocked his barton from 166 to 200 fsb and kept the ram still at the 166 setting would he still get a good performance increase? Or would it be a waste if the ram is still at the 166 setting?

nope, keeping ur ram at 166 while u've a fsb of 200 is not recommended. if can, upgrade to at least pc3200(ddr 400) ram, else u need to find ways to get ur pc2700(333) to run at 400, which is the same speed as ur fsb if ur cpu/board can do it.

Get the CPU/RAM as high as you can while maintaining a 1:1 ratio. Just increase it by a small increment. You'll most likely reach around 180~190 w/ loose timings when using PC2700. You may even reach 200 depending on the quality of the RAM. I have 6 stick of PC2700 that can do more than 200 easily.

i agree with doh! barton's are notorious for huge performance degredation when running the mem/fsb asynchronously. if you have money to spend, get some pc3200. otherwise just raise the fsb and relax your timings as much as you can

If barton is unlock, use multiplyer instead of FSB. Slight performance hit, but this way you don't have buy new ram.

His ram is Kingston Hyper X rated at 2-2-2-5@166

With loose timings at 200 will that degrade the performance much? How much do ram timings matter with the barton and an nforce2 mobo? Another thing is he is using the stock heatsink/fan and his temps are about 43-45idle and 50-55 load. Is that normal for his cpu? Think the heatsink might need to be re seated?

I've used 2-512's together, and one 512 dimm alone, of HyperX 2700, in two different machines. Both ran at 210 bus, 2.5-3-3-7 timings, with 2.6 to 2.7v. The single 512 dimm was a very early one, and it ran 190 bus with 2-2-2-5-1T timings. The two newer ones ran those timings at 180 bus (one dimm at a time). He can expect it to run 200 bus, 2.5-3-3-7 with default dimm voltage.

I got noticably better performance, with my Abit NF7, using 200 bus and CL 2.5 than with 166 bus and CL 2.0, both running 1:1.

I've got a stick of Muskin PC2700 "Basic Green" currently running at 182 FSB with my 2500+. My bottleneck @ 182 FSB is my 8RDA board, though, and not the PC2700.
