My friend is upgrading his Athlon XP 2500+ Barton to a AMD 64 3400+ and new corsair ram. We are just curious to see what kind of performance gain there will be in games?

System Now:
Athlon XP 2500+
1.5Ghz DDR 333 (Normal Ram I forgot Brand)
9800pro 128mb

Future System:
AMD 64 3400+
1.5Ghz DDR 400 Corsair
9800pro 128mb

I went from a 2500+@2.2 to a 3000+64 and was shocked of the difference it made.

I went from an Athlon XP 2500+ @ 2.3GHZ to an Athlon64 3200+ @ 2.2GHZ and noticed a big difference in games and multitasking.

I see a problem looming here. You're going to have 1.5GB of DDR400, meaning three 512MB modules, correct? The Athlon64 that is presently on the market will not run three modules at DDR400. It will drop them down to DDR200 (PC1600) speed for stability. The upcoming CG stepping of A64 should be able to do three DDR400 modules at DDR400 speeds, from what I read, but I don't think they're out yet.

With the RAM running at half speed, you're probably going to encounter poor performance. Incidentally, quantity of RAM is expressed in gigabytes, abbreviated GB, not gigahertz (GHz). But we know what you meant :D

MeCh is right on,

If anything run 1024 and just forget about 1.5... Your hit in performance will be more noticeable when you drop your ram speed to PC1600.. Than running JUST a gig..

Go for a Gig.

CG is already out. FX53 uses it. Don't know which other ones or how long it will be till they all use it

I noticed a little difference when I upgraded from a 2500@3200 to a A64 3200. SETI times dropped by about 20 minutes/WU and the 3D becnchmarks certainly shot up. Games play about the same, but now I have no problem playing in 1600x1200, whereas with the Barton I always kept it at 1280x1024 for some reason.

This was a good thread for me to read. In less than a month I am upgrading.

Current system:
Athlon XP 1700+
512 Mb Kingston (PC 2100)
9600 Pro

New system:
Athlon 64 3200+
1 Gig Mushkin special "2-2-2" (PC 3200)
9600 pro

Guess I am going to be blown away, huh?

As to the performance comparison, the Barton will hold it's own near the same clockspeed in everything but gaming that I tested both with. Gaming was where the A64 easily outperformed the Barton.
