A buddy of mine picked up a Athlon XP 1700+ from newegg last week. What arrived was a 1700+ with a AGOGA core.

He went ahead and unlocked it with rear window defogger repair kit and powered up it at 133x12.5x or 1666mhz or a XP 2000+ at default voltage.

Ran prime95 for 48 hours straight and Sandra burn-in for another 48 hours straight and the thing is stable as a rock.

We did not try FSB overclocking, just multiplier overclocking.

After this experience, he went and ordered 5 more XP 1700+ from newegg, waiting for them to arrive hoping they are also AGOGA cores.

Just though I would share this with everyone here.

You just need some clear nail polish, rear window defogger repair paint, and some tape.

Whole process takes about 30 minutes if you've done it before or about 1 hour if its your first time.

I've unlocked 5 XP's thus far, and my buddy has unlocked well over 20 XP's.

Killrose, I saw a site with a oc databse, where people claimed to co'ed their XPs to more than 2Ghz (not 2000+!!!), cannot remember the adress and my latest Windows-crash ate the bookmark.
The highest results in 3dMark 2001 were also run on Athlons of around 2Ghz, with oc'ed graphics-cards too. They all reached such speeds by super-cooling, peltiers on cpu and gpu.

I like to overclock, but I hate fan noise. I guess a water cooled system would be quite? Is this so?

title of your thread is a misleading.....
check the data base at overclockers.com....that is just an average overclock for an xp1700

< Crap I can Get that from my t-bird LoL >

That is at default voltage...most would have had to boost it up to 1.85volts or greater...

With lower voltage should be heat should be less of a factor...What kind of temp???

I wonder if this is the signs that since the 2000+xp 's had arrived that amd was getting better yields...It always seems that chips of a certain size always oc better later when cpu is like 3 to 4 versions ahead...ie remember the 1ghz axia's that many were hitting 1.4ghz plus with them while the 1.4ghz were only getting to like 1.55ghz...

Its called steppings. Sort of like lot # if you will. Take a look at my Athlon 1.4GHz, see where it says "AYHJA"? I think that gives you an idea.

Then head on over to the FAQs and read about exactly what a stepping is.

He got the 5 1700+ he ordered. They are all AGOGA core and all overclock to 2000+ (1.67ghz) but I don't think he has done extensive testing on these since he just got them yesterday.

Looks like newegg just dropped their price from $136 to $122! even better deal!

What would your buddy charge to unlock one and sell them????

You are getting total stability at default 1.75v??? Just raised the multiplier from 11 to 12.5???

So all I need is a board that offers multiplier adjustments???

Let me know, please...

hmmm cool. Part of me screaming wanting to try this new thing and other part of me saying this is so pointless just to get 181MHz increase(using birdy 1.4 @1.485). If I buy an XP1700+ and it doesn't work after doing this, I'd be somewhat pissed for sure.

I think I'll try out my way of unlocking it :D

these items and tools comes to my mind:

small point tweezers

white crayon

rear window defogger thingy

strands of wire pulled from a braided wire

1.0mm solder

soldering iron

hydrochloric acid

modeler's super thin super glue

tin foil

1,1,1 TCE.

method 1:

clean off the connection with hydrochloric acid

smear the whole L1 area with crayon

wipe off crayon from connection point with 1,1,1 TCE

join the connections with defogger kit

method 2:

clean off the connection with acid

fill gaps with super glue

clean off glue remnants from connection with acetone

tin all the points using soldering iron

solder a strand of copper pulled from braided wire to jump each connection

test and cover the whole area with epoxy to protect it

I think I'll try method 2 :D

It'd be nice to have some dead CPU's to practice on.

If I could get it to work, could I continue to use my Coolermaster fan? I don't see why not since retail XP2000+ comes with this.

<< Damn I just received xp1700 from newegg but it was AGKGA, I really want AGOGA. Can I RMA it? >>

There's a 15% restocking fee on returns. No exchanges unless defective. As far as I remember this is Newegg's policy.

They aren't obligated to give you an XP1700+ overclocable to XP2000+ speed and thats just the risk you take.
