Athlon XP 1800+ question

Ok Im running a athlon 1 ghz @ 1.33

If I installed an athlon XP 1800+ what kind of performance boost should I expect to see?

Well it depends....Certain appz hat will take advantage of hardware prefetch and sse coding will definitelt help...IN internet and daily use could be slightly to not noticeable...IN encoding appz like divx yo uwill get a healthy boost...

Look for reviews of when the xps came out...anandtech often would use old tbirds 1333 and 1400 for comparison....

depends as well...what is the vid card??? If it gf3 or newer then it was unlikley the vid card would be a bottleneck so the cpu boost should be noticeable.

Do a search but I believe I have been reading from the amd camp that AGOIA and AROIA are the best steeping...many are getting the 1800+ xp to 2200+ levels with air cooling alone....

Go read anandtechs roundup on socket a coolers.....I run P4 now and I been out of the loop on really good coolers for the xps...

Buy an XP1600+ and unlock it. Your current hsf should be more than up to the task. My guess is you'll be able to oc to around 1700-1800MHz. If you're not an overclocker, ignore this message.

I wouldn't go for that upgrade, personally

1.33 Tbird to an 1800+
You'll see some performance increases, benchies for most... but you aren't happy with a 1.33 tbird?

Up to you though

Jaybee? Doug? I think? lol hey

Edit: Mehhh I guess you can get 1800+ for 80 some bucks, 80 some bucks for 200mhz and the advantages of the XP

Switching from Tbird to XP alone is worth up to 40%, depending on the application. Most often, it's about 3-8% improvement. Check here and here for benchmarks. Current XP1600+'s are overclocking like mad too. 1733MHz is not too much to hope for from one -- from what I've seen, most people who try can hit it with good cooling. That's 30% faster than 1333MHz; overall, a good upgrade for $70-80.

jediphx, big negative on using the GW FOP32-1. It was made with the earlier duron/athlon in mind up to about 1Gig. With an XP1800, you'll want to go with a copper hsf. I used to use a fop32-1 on a duron650 @ 866, lapped and AS. But the cpu would push approximately 50C. An XP 1800 will pump out about another 20-25Watts above what my duron was doing, so you definitely need a better hsf.

I can't recall any reviews of that hsf off-hand. However, a Tbird at 1.33 puts off as much heat as an XP2000+. So I assumed it could handle it. Sorry -- I am not the one to ask for hsf recommendations.

PS My $7.50 Speeze Big Rock II does a decent job for me at 1.66GHz/1.8v. The Super Rock is supposed to cool better with the same (supposedly quiet) noise level.

Sorry, jaybee, I didn't mean to step on your post! You are correct in the power outputs, but I was just going what I had seen with the fop32-1. Also looking at the site:
http://www.overclockers.com/articles214/
I'm not sure of the difference between a fop32-1 and a fop32e, but from the pics, there aren't many. I was also using the GW fan that came with the heatsink - that could also have posed a problem for me.

jediphx, are you using the fop32-1 on your athlon 1.33? What temps are you seeing? Using socket thermistor/other method?

np IRJack. As I said I don't know the hsf you mention so you are probably correct. Anyway, here are the noise results from the AT socket A roundup, sorted by performance. My fan weighs in at 54 dbA and I'd prefer a quieter fan. Can't complain though for $7.50.
