Athlon XP 1700+ running at 1.1ghz

I just installed my upgrade, Athlon XP 1700+, Abit KR7A-133 and 256mb DDR. Originally I had a checksum error on boot and when I went into the bios the cpu was detected as a 1500 but running at 1.1ghz. I fixed the checksum error by loading the mobos optimal or fail-safe settings and the cpu is now dected as a 1700 but running at 1.1ghz.
It also feel dreadfully slow, not much faster than my old Athlon 700, but I havn't reinstalled yet since I want to fix this problem first.

Yeah .. you're running at 100 FSB though.

So you are at 133? I don't know what to say. You are running the same install of windows that was on your old rig? (old motherboard and cpu maybe?)
When you boot the bios shows xp1700 eh? This is a mystery to me.
 
I quote my bios:

CPU Name Is AMD Athlon (tm)
CPU Operating Speed 1700+(133)
CPU FSB Clock (MHz) 133

The manual says that if it's an XP, it should say "AMD Athlon XP (tm)".

The checksum error is gone.
 
Did you fish around in your BIOS? or are these numbers just what your BIOS displays on boot?
Go in your bios and see what your FSB is actually set to. You might have to flash it, but I'm sure that that board supports XP out of the box.
 
The stuff I quoted is from in the bios. I got the 1100mhz from boot and 1104mhz from in windows though.

EDIT: IRC anyone?
 
From what I know, which is very little, a cmos checksum error is caused when the bios compares the hardware listed in it and the actual hardware and they turn out different. This would also be why loading optimal or fail-safe settings fix it.
 
Can anyone please help? Today is taking the piss. My floppy drive wont workwith this mobo for no reason either, even though windows detects it.
 
Fixed. I had to change to user defined settings and set everything manually. Although it said 133, it obviously wasn't set to 133.
 
Abit BIOSes on the KR7 board series don't do well at cpu recognition. I had similar problem when I installed mine with XP1600.

Set 'CPU Operating Speed' to 'User Define'. Set 'Multiplier Factor' to correct value for your cpu (11 I think for your XP1700). Set 'CPU FSB Clock' to 133 or whatever cpu clock speed you wish to run.

Windows hasn't necessarily detected your floppy drive, it assumes a floppy drive. Even if you remove your floppy physically and from the BIOS, Windows will still have a floppy listed.

Double check the cables on your floppy drive.
 
dunkster: that's exactly what I did.

sandorski: I just had my floppy cable the wrong way up. It's a habit of mine, as well as always getting the keyboard and ps2 connections in the wrong ports.
