My friend has a good rig, but problem is it keeps on restarting in the middle of a warcraft III game.

Here's his rig.

- Athlon XP 1700+ w/ Thermaltake Volcano 9
- ASUS A7V266-C
- 256MB Kingmax PC2700
- Inno3d GF4 Ti4200 128MB
- Enermax 350W
- Maxtor D740X 40Gig, Sony 48X CDRW (both in IDE 1 channel)
- Sony 16x DVD Drive (alone in IDE 2 channel)

We just tried to fresh install Windows XP and formatted the drive and then installed the following...

- Windows XP Service Pack 1
- VIA Hyperion 4.45 4 in 1 drivers
- Detonator 40.41 Drivers

But to no avail it still restarts. So i went into the bios and tried to change some settings. Memory timings were set to the most conservative (2.5-3-3-6-2T). And multiplier and fsb settings set back to default (11x133)

BTW, Cpu and case temps are of the norm so heat is not an issue. Also, Warcraft III was patched with the latest 1.04 update.

Anyone have any ideas?

A 350W Enermax should be good enough for that rig, have you tried testing the system with a different stick of memory? BTW, try it without the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, I've had less problems with the Microsoft default drivers.

It may be enough, but this particular unit could be faulty.
definitely does sound like PSU issue with the other stuff put aside.
quite possibly memory also.

only 2 possibilities IMHO.

I take my comment about the PSU back. It definitely could be bad PSU, but 350 watts should be enough juice for that setup, I've got an Enermax 350 and more peripherals then that setup.

Power supply or bad capacitors on motherboard. Had the same problem on one of the Shuttle microATX units. Replaced the MB caps and all is well! :)

Look at the caps...if you see swelling on top, then that may be the problem.

Good Luck! :)

I had that problem once and tried swapping out everything including the PS and it ended up being a bad motherboard.

Could be the memory but it could also be overheating.

My XP1700 runs so hot that I have to keep my case open. If I don't the thing will reboot. I set my MB so that when it hits 65c, it warns me to shut it off.
