Athlon XP 1700 or P4 1.6a, which one should I get

Alright, I'm gonna be ordering a new system either tonight or tomorrow and have decided on either of these two setups;

P4 1.6a(retail)
MSI 645 Ultra
Black Evercase

or

Athlon XP 1700(oem)
Epox 8KHA+
Black Evercase
sk-6 and 80mm fan

I'll be OC both to as high as I can get them. Going by the average OC from overclockers.com the P4 averages 2296 and the Athlon averages 1665 which do you think would perform better in games at these OC speeds?

btw-I'll probably be getting the GF4 ti4200 when it comes out to go with it
 
I bet i will get jumped on but here is my recommendation.

P4/1.6A
is what I will get right now.

I am personally using an AXP1700+ overclocked but I can assure you that at 2.3GHz NW is going to be faster than a 1.7XP.
 
I say go with the P4 1.6Ghz too. The overclocks are too impressive to ignore and the price is very attractive. Combined with a fast DDR mobo, and you've got one killer system.

okay, both P4 and AMD XP is just as stable, but what is affecting the stabily of each system is other components in the system
 
The AMD system will be faster unless you get a substantial overclock with the P4 1.6A GHz.
If you use an Intel chipset with the Intel precessor you'll have a rig that'll be less likely to have problems like an AMD processor running on a VIA/SiS/ALi motherboard.

If I was in your position I'd pay a bit more and get the 1.8A GHz or the 2.0A GHz so even if you don't get any overclock you still get a decent speed. I'm getting a 2.0A GHz + i845 DDR next week. 🙂
 
I have a P4B266 and 1.6A with generic PC2100 memory.

I hit 2240 Mhz (140Mhz bus speed) without any voltage modifications and using the retail HSF.

I am memory limited at this point (because of the generic RAM). I'm sure I could go higher.

Ran Prime95 all night at 2.24 Ghz. no problems.



 
Hey, i'm making pretty much the same descision as the original poster, exept i wont be overclocking it at all... would you still recomend the 1.6GHz P4? (the Athlon XP 1700 is a whole lot cheaper...)

If you are NOT OCing, then go for the XP. I just recently got mine set up and it rocks, is stable, not a hiccup. Temps are all good, 27 degrees at rest and 45 when pushing it.

Next upgrade will be the vid card - 4200 is most likely choise. And then it'll really fly.

for myself i like everything AMD has had to offer so far.........price and performance. i see alot of people going to the northwoods cause of the increased overclocking ability thus edgeing out the xp.

my next upgrade will be with the thoroughbred............i can wait for the moment as my systems are fast enough the way they are

If the 1.6A didn't overclock so when i would get the 1700+. But since it does then go for the 1.6A all the way even if u hate intel 🙂.
 
Your best bet is to wait for AMD's .13 micron thoroughbred (wtf is that anyway?) and decide then based on overclocking and performance, imho.
 
thoroughbred is a kind of horse, which has been amd's naming scheme since GM told them to drop the car code names for cores.


is the 1.6a the processor that makes the AMD fanboys return to being intel fanboys?

Thoroughbred could be as much as 4-5 months away for the desktop (coming April for notebooks)...that's a long time to wait. Plus, when it debuts at 2400+, the Thoroughbred will hardly be a value processor. Thoroughbred may restore AMD's price/performance advantage...but it looks to be another six months before that's gonna happen.
 
Apparently I stand corrected on the thoroughbred, but I did notice one other thing:

you might want to get an oem p4 and your own heatsink/fan if you're going to push it up to 2.3 ghz. I recommend alpha personally, but I guess it's a matter of preference.
