Athlon XP 1700+ for $115 with Free S&H

Don't you think it makes more sense to pay a few bucks more for the cpu and not risk the dangers and damage (shortened computer life) inherent with overclocking?

<< What's the warranty which include labor & parts. >>

I'm assuming the warranty is 30days, as is the norm when it comes to OEM CPUs, and is common practice at Newegg.com

The thing is, are you really going to be using this computer in 2-3 years? Overclocking a CPU does not drastically reduce the span of a processors life, and even if it does shave a year of the life of a processor, don't you think the prices of a lowly 1.47ghz processor will have substantially dropped (in the $30-$50 range) in 1 1/2 to 2 years from now?

What has "sense" got to do with anything? Overclocking is the challenge for many people of pushing technology to the limit. The more risk the greater the reward and sense of achievement. I hacked my Athlon for the pure hell of it but suffered the consequences of failure ($115 to be precise). I've been overclocking for years and this is my first disaster so I guess maybe I'm due one. It sure has made me a lot less cocky but I've learned a lot from the experience... like don't try cutting the bridges on an Athlon! 😉

I'll be leaving the new one alone... for at least a week... or longer if the wife finds out what I've done.

<< Throw in a motherboard, and I'm all over this deal. >>

you should keep your eyes on TCWO in case that XP1700 + Biostar Mobo deal comes back

We should be so lucky. TWCO on the phone told me it was highly unlikely the deal would return. (The rep I spoke to was pissed that he didn't get a chance to get in on it himself.)

How does Newegg handle shipping if you order multiple things from them? Like, if I'm ordering one thing that has free shipping and another thing that has $10 shipping, what do I pay? What if I order two things with $10 shipping? I've never ordered from Newegg before, but everyone says what a great store they are so I figure this proc is a good thing to start with 🙂 But I also need a mobo and power supply, and I'll get them simultaneously if it means I can save on shipping.

The easiest way to find out is to add the items to your cart and then to checkout. If you don't want to order then just abort.

<< Throw in a motherboard, and I'm all over this deal. >>

uh......order the one from outpost, its on back order, but it comes w/ mobo, case and ps. they chare $86 for the case and mobo, and $112 for the cpu....only $9 fr shipping, but i cancelled mine b/c i got tired of waiting, if yournot in a hurry, thats a good deal there a thread around here somewhere that keeps popping up

Looking at this review I'd say yes, but you'll probably be >50C with the case open. See my superfan page in my sig for an idea or two.

Are the new batches of XP's still multiprocessor-capable?

Edit: NM, I found the Tom's article (Feb. 11, 2002) that states they are still MP-capable.

If the "Refurb" EpoX 8KHA+ deal at newegg is still around, together you'd have a great great combo. No shipping on either item! Now that's a deal!

sorry...please bear w/ me...I'm new to this whole getting a new processor thing! 🙂

If I purchase the 1700 from them, I understand that I"ll get a HSF w/ it. It's going to go in a KR7ARAID board...do I need to get anything better to cool it? Do I need the Artic Silver stuff? I have to be all hardcore and unlock it and stuff before I need any of those fans don't I?

please someone LMK. thx!

God Bless

Tanner

No no no.

Processors are sold two different ways: retail and OEM. Retail gets you a much longer warranty, a pretty box, and an HSF. OEM gets you a short warranty (typically 30 days), no pretty box, and no HSF. This is an OEM deal. If you buy it, you're on your own as far as getting an HSF.

Most HSFs I've bought have come with a "thermal pad", which is a great thing, with one slight flaw: it sucks. Scrape it off and put on some thermal compound. Arctic Silver is the Rolls-Royce of thermal compounds, but just about any compound will work adequately.

Be sure to remove the thermal pad right away. Don't take the proc for a test drive first. The thermal pad melts to the proc and is all goopy if you later remove the HSF.

k,

i got the 1700retail. that means it'll come w/ a HSF...kewl 🙂 there's no more free shipping from on Newegg from what I can tell.

anyone wanna confirm that?

is it so terrible that I can't get the gooey pad off mostly w/o BREAKIN' my friggin' Proc? and then put all the expensive HSF/ASIII on it and stuff? Man...this is such a hassle! I can't believe how difficult this is! 🙂

needing help,

Tanner

He means remove the heatpad that resides on the bottom of the heatsink itself , the cpu core doesn't have anything on it .

Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap!

I just checked my order, and either I or NewEgg screwed up, probably the former. I seem to have ordered the refurbished 8K7A+ instead of the 8KHA+.

Crap crap crap crap crap. Now the 8KHA+ is gone, and I'll bet the 8K7A+ is a "real" refurb instead of the "new" refurbed 8KHA+es.

I need advice. I know very little about the AMD760 chipset the 8K7A+ has. The computer I'm building needs to be a reasonably good performer, but it doesn't need to be lightning-fast top-of-the-line. Should I return the refurbished 8K7A+, paying return shipping plus 15% restock fee, or keep it and hope for the best?

Did I mention crap??
