this is a really sweet processor for the overclocker enthusiast, and it has 4 cores! sadly, it gets blown away by the g3258 in almost everything that doesnt optimize for 3+ cores.
I'd get this over a g3258 if the bundled deals were cheaper, but they usually aren't :(

I can't really find a cheap reputable board to pair this with. All the boards have mediocre ratings

I have a Gigabyte 88 something or other...it isn't an FX board, it's an mATX and it was $50. I have an 860K at 4.4GHz at stock voltage with the stock cooler.

My overclocked CPUmark performance is basically level with an i5-4570S and slightly lower than an i5-4670k. Obviously overclocking the i5-4670k turns the tables considerably. Both the i5's use almost half the power at idle and about 1/4 less power under load.

But we're comparing a $70 CPU to a $200 CPU.

This is the first AMD system I've built in almost 10 years and I'm not disappointed. It just seems like ever since the Core 2 (and especially the Core i) came out, AMD didn't have anything relevant for the price in the $100 bracket, but after AMD price cuts and Intel slowing down on IPC improvements over the years, AMD is relevant if it is cheap enough.

Stability and compatibility all seem fine. I run the system 24/7 with monthly reboots. It's my gaming PC with a GTX 770.

Microcenter B&M has a $120 A10 7850K & mobo bundle (the APU enabled cpu).
Too bad they don't have the X4 860K in one of their famously cheap mobo bundles (I want one).

Fry's has this cpu with a name brand motherboard on sale for $80-90 AR every so often. Last time was a couple weeks ago, and before that I think a couple months. Always tempted to get it and find some use for it.

I still flirt with the idea of swapping out my 7850K for an 860K since the the CPU throttles under GPU load in an APU...

For people that own both G3258 and Athlon x4 860K (I own both myself), I would be interested to hear your opinions about performance differences in various games.

So far the only testing I have done is this leveled building scene in BF 4 64 player (with 60 to 64 players on the map) where Xbox One is being tested:

The GPU I used is the R7 250X run at 720p high using Mantle (to approximate the graphics performance of Xbox One.)
