Athlon X2 question

Is it normal to have to set affinity to one core to get some games to work properly? KOTOR2, Far Cry and Pirates act wierd and sped up and sometimes crash unless I set the affinity to either CPU 0 or 1. I have an Athlon X2 3800+.

Downloading the AMD X2 CPU drivers helps for most games and cured my problems with Far Cry for example.

However, there will be some games that still seem to give a problem even after the drivers are installed (e.g. Thief Deadly Shadows, Ground Control 2). In this case, setting affinity seems to be the only option. Some people seem to have benefited from the Windows hotfix (although this is supposed to work only if Cool 'n Quiet is enabled).

I use Runfirst to set affinity - just put a copy in your Windows\System32 directory and add runfirst to your shortcut to start the game.

Hope this helps ....

If the X2 driver doesn't work, there is also a microsoft hotfix for dual cores. This bug affects both Intel and AMD dual cores, not just AMD despite what some people think, and it's software related. I didn't have to install the hotfix on my X2 system, just the driver, and everything works great. My pentium-d on the other hand, even with the hotfix, some things still don't work right.
