Athlon 1.4 vs. P4 1.4.

I need to encode DIVX as fast as possible. (realtime) and encode MP3 audio.

Which chip would you get (I chose 1.4 vs 1.4, cause they're in the same price range, but I'd probably be willing to go as high as 1.7 on the P4 before the price got too high)

Anyway, your opinion, and any benchmarks would be nice.

1.4 vs 1.4 a tbird wins hands down in everything

1.4 vs 1.7 is gets closer but a tbird will probably still win with a nice margin for video encoding cause of the FPU

last i heard if you get the P4 optimized version of flask it owns pretty much everything, my p4 1.5 does about 1 hour of dvd video takes about 4 - 4.5 hours to complete.

if you want to encode really fast get a hardware encoder you can encode in realtime. i think matrox has a nice card

Do not encode in flask, use nandub, you'll get much better results. And i don't think nandub is sse2 optimised.

Just keep in mind that the hardware encoders are usually one format (or one range of one format) only. Like Mpeg 1 / Mpeg 2. I don't think any hardware encoders do "DIVX" and I doubt they will.

I'm gonig to go see about that possible ATI hardware encoder (I cant afford several thousand $$ for aprofessional capture card). And I'll probably go with a athlon 1.4 and see how high I can clock it.

Hey notfred, I'm travelling down the same road as you. I am going to be using my 1.33GHz Tbird with 768MB of PC133 to rip errr....... I mean backup my DVDs to DIVX and then even maybe making VCDs out of them. I will watch this tread with interest.

Hey, what's up? Haven't seen you around lately.

Anyway, I'm not gonig to be ripping DVDs (I've alreday got them on DVD, why rip them?) but I'm going to be recording TV shows.

It'll be pretty similar though.

That is going to be the ticket for you man, but I just bought this Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO and I won't be able to upgrade it for a long time. Saving to buy a house right now.
