Athlon vs. Duron

Durons may be cheaper than Athlons, but the prices for motherboards seem to offset the differences, while its overall slighty lower price is then offset by it's slightly lower performance..

So, is which should I get? Are Durons are much more overclockable than Athlons? How are the motherboards between the two? Would it be wiser to wait about a month for better Duron motherboards or for prices to drop a bit?

I'm not in a real rush to upgrade here.

It seems as though the Durons are more overclockable than the Tbird. That is what the average on overclockers.com tell me. IF you have the money go to for the Tbird. I went for the Duron because it was half the price of the same speed Tbird.

I have to agree with Stephen24, I was thinking of a Duron but opted for the T-Bird. I can't wait till it arives 😉.

The Duron from 700 to 800 MHz offers 90% of an Athlon's performance for 68% of its price. It therefore offers more performance for less money, making it the only valid choice for anyone who does not need more performance than is offered by the fastest Duron chip. Only digital video professionals can realistically claim this.

All SocketA motherboards can use either Duron or Thunderbird processors so this is not a factor.

🙂

AMD never released a Thunderbird, they released an Athlon "with performance enhancing L2 cache." When some one says Athlon today, by and large, they mean Thunderbird. And as I said above, it's a great chip, it's just that the Duron is almost as fast for less money.

I second the Duron! It overclocks pretty easy and it's cheap, so who cares too much if you fry it anyways... overclock it by one step and you've already got T-bird performance without paying extra.

I give a slight edge in gaming to the Athlon. (Slot A)

The Duron is pretty sweet as an overclocker, but so are the Thunderbirds. The Thunderbirds seem to run alot cooler these days than the originals. Must be a better process they are made on or something. The original Thunderbirds were toaster ovens!

I am getting Sandra scores right at the Athlon 1G, so I'm guessing those tests are calculation w/o much stress on the cache. In reviews, the Duron gives near the Athlon performance. But, with the 133MHz FSB parts...the Duron just can't do it.

::impatiently waits for his $128 GLADIAC to arrive...:::

Duron is a good processor, but TBird is even better. To put this in the real word, think about these processors:
AMD Duron = little family sedan, which will get you across town just fine, Ford Escort for example
AMD TBird = 4x4 SUV, which will get you anywhere and much more reliable and convinient vehicle

and as far as motherboard, both AMD Duron and AMD TBird (Athlon), they both use the same SocketA motherboard.

A stupid analogy, Andrey, and as unnecessary as it is flawed.
The Duron is the Tbird with less level 2 cache (only 64Kb compared to...256Kb?)
Basically they are the same but the Duron is made cheaper and in several situations the Athlon will outperform it by a slight margin.

Your talking Slot A Athlon obviously.... Dont go that route.... It cuts off your option for future upgrades. IMO its better to spend an extra $20 now so you dont have to spend an extra $150 on a new MB for your next CPU.

I thought the durons uses the same motherboards the t-birds do? I've heard quite a few people recommending that others should get an AsusA7v and a duron, then later upgrade to a t-bird if desired.

andrey, your analogy is so retarded, I cannot believe your keyboard let you post it.

An escort? Thats what a Cyrix PR166 might be.

The Duron is like a C1500 w/a 300c.i. V8, the Athlon is the 350.

You can't tell much of a real world difference, at all.

Build several of each, and you will agree. Heck, just read anands reviews.
