Athlon SMP Question

Either the Asus A7M266-D or Tyan Tiger MP S2460 using dual Athlon XP 2000+ processors...

I have a AGOGAY XP2000+ that is brown and a AGOIAY 2000+ that is green. Will these cpu's work in these dual boards at 1667MHz?

Some people tell me that you can actually run different speed chips in the dual Athlon boards, others say no you must have the same speed AND same stepping/revision as with Intel.

Anyone know for sure?

You might have trouble running those XP 2000's in SMP. You may need to unlock them. You should check the forums at 2cpu.com.

Look at the L5 bridges. If the bridge closest to the center of the chip is cut, you'll need to reconnect it to run SMP.

Even on Intel SMP machines, the CPU's could be of different steppings. It was a manufacturer recommendation that was rarely enforced by the motherboard makers because it was really only an issue in mission-critical environments.

But you definitely MUST run both chips at the same clock speed.

I would definitely agree.

Though FWIW, early BIOS revisions of the Tiger MP S2460 did support multiprocessing at varying clockspeeds. I can't say as I'd trust it though. The AMD760/760MP was never designed for such.

I was suspicious of the L5 bridges.

Both CPU need to be unlocked.

The same CPU speed/stepping factoid is more of an ideal scenario, but I'm not 100% sure that it is 100% necessary. I believe that www.2cpu.com has an FAQ that I got this from.

The Tiger does not support any 2000 and up processors at this time. 1900+ max. The Thunder K7 however does. I believe this is due to the fact that AMD has never certified the Tiger due to the original power requirements established by AMD for the 760MP chipset were bypassed by Tyan to allow usage of a standard ATX PSU. Tyan tech support and all documentation state 1900+ MAX.
