why does microsoft name its OSes after BC mountains?

Mount XP? Mount 98SE?

Windows Whistler?

Whistler, Longhorn, Blackcomb (actually Longhorn is the bar that sits basically right between Whislter and Blackcomb mountaints).

AMD's core names are California cities, while Intel's are Oregon rivers.

Clawhammer, California?

Hammer is a name I haven't heard in a few years, i.e. since AMD stopped using it ;)

Let me put it this way: Hammer is to Longhorn as Venice is to Vista.

try again. vista and longhorn are the exact same thing, just different code names. "hammer" cores are not like venice cores. one obvious reason is the side of the die. .13 micron vs .09

What, nobody remembers Sharptooth and Littlefoot? AMD changes naming schemes to seperate by landmarks.

K6, they used stuff based on the Land Before Time, because that movie was roxxxor or something.
Then they moved to cars.
Then they moved to horses (Palomino, Thoroughbred, etc.) The mustang core kind of helped this transition along.
Barton => http://neuromancerwp.free.fr/Micha%20Barton%2001%20-%201600.png
And then Hammer and Clawhammer. Named as such because they smashed conventions (and the competition)
And then they moved to Californian cities, in order to give them an air of stability and sophistication for this interim period when people are getting used to seeing them right next to Intel on the shelves.

Throw in Sharptooth/Littlefoot since the late K6 chips rocked the universe.

Also, Mustang and Camaro were tentative names for the Palomino and Morgan respectively.

City and street names and the like cannot be copyrighted. That's why Intel and other companies use them as codenames and such.

I know the difference between the vista and longhorn names. Longhorn IS the code name, while Vista will be the actual product name.

I thought the Hammer name was simply a pre-release code name for AMD64 cores (way back in the day) and Venice, San Diego are actual core names.
