Athlon cracked core

Hello. I cracked the corner off my athlon... I was wondering how much of the actual core one could crack/chip off before the processor stops working. So far, about .25mm of one corner and 1mm of the opposite corner has been chipped off but it still works. Can anyone point me to xray or lithography pictures of the actual circuitry as compared to the size of the silicon core? Thanks.

i'm surprised it even runs. I've chipped two athlons already and both of them were completely inoperable. The way i chipped my 900mhz athlon sounds the same as what you did, but my 1.2 athlon had the tiniest knick in the corner of the core and refused to work.

So does it work? Sometimes people will crack the core and it'll work fine but the life of the cpu tends to be shorter(maybe). You may have lucked out if it's just the corner.

Yes, it works, running at 1215MHz @53C. I installed an Arkua 7228 on it. It's running on an MSI K7T-Turbo w/ raid. That cooler isn't coming off any time soon. The clearance was minimal and that clip will be extremely difficult to get off even after taking the motherboard out of the case.

I didn't think about taking a picture of it... that huge chip off the corner scared me but I'm surprised it still runs. I'm hoping it's just the L1/L2 that's missing. 🙂

I wonder how much it'll overclock... the L1 bridges were joined at the factory, too.
