Well I just noticed that when I start up my computer it comes up saying Athlon -700 mhz when before it used to come up saying Athlon - 800 mhz.

Anything I can check? Does this mean it is running at 700 mhz now or something? What can I do to correct it? Thanks.

What happened/ did u do in the time between it being 800 then 700. BIOS flash maybe ?? . Are you using a GFD ?? . Really need more info. Have you tried WCPUID for confirmation.

Well some program was install preventing Windows 98 from loading all the way. I had to go in safe mode and uninstall the program. I went into the BIOS setup, but didn't make any changes to anything related to the CPU. What's GFD? And what is WCPUID?

download wcpuid (in the downloads section) and run it, it will tell you what speed your cpu is at.
also, you might wanna check for the code on the processor casing itself (starts by amd-k7.......) and post it.

I opened it the other day and remember seeing the number on the processor like K7550 with some other numbers after it.

Says it's running at 704.93mHz, and the clock multiplyer is 3.5

Below is what the program gave me...

Oh wait!
hahaha you bought that cpu as a Athlon 800? If so, you have been screw. If indeed it say K7550, your processor is acutally a 550Mhz cpu. Maybe someone fool around with the cpu and overclock it to 700-800. Where you bought it? Did you overclock it or they tell you its 800?

Sounds like a trace to the multiplier is broken. Happens with overclocking. I bet those remarks do that, too.

3.5 multiplier??!! Also, why is at 1/3 cache at only 700? Something is screwy. I would call AMD and read them the serial numbers of the CPU case and see what they say. If it indeed is a remarked, maybe they will replace it? Where did you get it? Do you live in Australia? That is where most of the remarked CPU's were being sold...

I bought it at a local computer fair. Got it for a good price. The guy is local, so if anything comes up I will bring it back to him and get my money back. I will check the serial number tomorrow. Before it came up saying 800 mHz, though. Is this a 550 remarked or something?

Open up your case and write down the numbers on the CPU. Post them here and we will be able to help you a little more.

No, that's sounds cool. Everything looks right with yours. The multiplier is right, as is the cache speed. For instance, 4.0x200 is 800mhz, so you are all right. The other guys looks to be a 650 (3.25x200)... Does your serial # start with "K7800", then you are cool. I think the other guy has a 650 that has been modded or somethin'. Don't worry...

Crxrick- I think you have a modded or remarked Athlon 650. First of all, yours is a Model 1. That means it is a .25micron fab process, I believe all Athlons over 750 are .18micron (model 2). Next your multiplier is 3.25 which would make it a 650. Also, the 700's and below ran at 1/2 cache, the 750-850 run at 2/5 cache, and the 900-1ghz run at 1/3. Yours is running at 1/3...not right even if it was a 800. I think you have been sold a bad CPU...but I would check with AMD first. AMD also has a CPUID program of their own on their site, check that out too. Also, notice how on the guys WCPUID info below it is noted to be a "Genuine Athlon Processor" and yours is a "AMD K7(tm) Processor", I think the model 1's show up as a K7 and not a Athlon. If indeed AMD confirms this, I would bring it back to the guy immediately unless AMD will replace it for you. They may want to get a hold of the remarked unit...

Here are the numbers on the processor...

AMD-K7550M7R51B C
219952638852

The processor has a small sticker on it with "800" written on it.

Is this a remarked processor? Supposed to be an Athlon 800. If so, there is no doubt that I will be taking it back since I got scammed. Good thing I payed on credit card.

Yeah man, according to those numbers you have a 550 Athlon that has been modified somehow. There should be no sticker on the case except for an AMD one. The three numbers after K7 are the speed of the CPU, which in your case is 550. Sorry guy, but you got scammed. Somebody probably soldered that to modify the speed...not cool if it was sold to you as a 800:( If he tries to give you a problem, tell him AMD was interested in getting their hands on it and wanted to know where it came from. I am not sure how much you paid, but I can give you some links to some reputable online retailers with some good prices. Let me know your price range and what motherboard you are using. If you have a AMD 750 chipset, you can get a 700, 800 or 900 T-Bird real cheap. You can also send me a private message if you like and I will give you some more info. It really sucks that you got a remarked one, but at least you came to the right place and figured it out. Good luck...

I presume you bought yours as a 550 and used a GFD to kick it up to 600. If so you are fine. The other guy bought his Athlon as a 800mhz, when it was really a modded 550. Yours seems ok too. If you want to be sure, call AMD and read them the numbers off the CPU case (if you still have it) and they will confirm for you.
