Athlon 64 XP ? Is there a big difference between 754 & 939

For the Athlon 64 cpus, is there a big difference between the socket 754 and 939, if the cpu has the same clock speed?

I think I want the LanParty MOBO, since it is a cheaper alternative than the 939 boards.

I've been outta the game for a while, so I'm sorry if this seems like a stupid question.

Socket 939 chips can use dual channel memory, socket 754 uses single channel memory. Also all the new proccessors are going to be socket 939, so socket 754 won't be as upgradable. As for the CPU's if they are both say a 3200+, they will perform about the same.

They both perform about the same, but neither will be too long lasting. Once socket 900 comes out, amd will drop any plans for making any more 754 or 939 cpus.

From a performance view, almost no difference, from a heat and power perspective, substantial difference. Check out this Xbit Article.

thats like a dothan almost 12w idle and 39W load!!

The dual channel memory support in S939 has been shown to increase performance by roughly 5% versus same clock speed chips on S754. This difference can widen or narrow based on your application and processor's internal cache.

Furthermore, it's been shown that the memory controller on S754 is more suseptable to issues with high latency memory paths. In specific, a lot of people have complained that installing two double-sided DDR400 DIMMs causes their S754's memory controller to puke, forcing punters to reduce their memory's clock speed to handle it.

However, I just picked up an Athlon64 2800+ (S754) as a Christmas gift for my brother. Even though its single channel on the cheapest nForce3 board Gigabyte makes, it spanks my Athlon 3200+ (SocketA) on a top-of-the-line dual channel nForce3 ABit board to no ends. Further testing of this board before I give it to him will be required, of course. Must make sure it doesn't DOA on him a day after I give it to him. 🙂
