with that budget you'd definately be better off going A64, Athlon XP is realistically only for if you're upgrading an old system or only have a hundred or two to spend.

You've got $550 to build a gaming rig from scratch. Case/PSU is predetermined and is $99. Which route do you go?

Same thing but with $850?

I figured this would happen, I tend to do it a lot.

Say you currently have $550 total. You've got your heart set on this one case w/ PSU and nothing can make you change your mind. The Case/PSU is $99 leaving you to spend $451 on all the other hardware in a gaming rig. Which route would you go? My guess is you would have to go Athlon XP. So lets ignore this situation.

Now apply the same thing to if you had $850. -$99 for the CASE/PSU, leaving you with $751 for all the other hardware in a gaming rig. Which route would you go, AXP or A64?

Don't wait for 939- you will be waiting for altesat 6 months if the new reports hold merit (As it does look they do). That and if you go 2500+ and an Overlcock that is pretty much the limit of your compter and you will need to purchase an entire new computer when time comes to make the swap. If you go A64 754 you have a further upgrade path if you want to slap a new 754 CPU in there.

As for the whole Doom3/Nvidia debate~ If Doom3 liscensing will be as crazy as we can assume, ATI better start cranking out better OGL drivers ;)
