Ok, I am in the midst of buying a mid-range system. I believe Athlon 64 is better for the long run because A. It performs in games better B. It will be compatible with XP 64 and other 64 bit apps further enhancing performance.

My question is. What is it about the 64 bit extensions that makes the A64 out perform the high clocked Northwoods? And which is better in the long run?

The current P4s are at the end of their life in regard to pin count etc...

I got rid of my P4 800mhz FSB system and got a Athlon64 3000+. Socket 754 will be supported with faster chips and chipsets for at least another year of not longer.

Ghandi (if that's your real name!:D), the Athlon64's outperforming the higher-clocked P4's has absolutely nothing to do with them being 64-bit-enabled. All of the AMD chips perform more functions per clock cycle, meaning they are much more efficient at any frequency. This isn't a new thing. It's the reason AMD started using the naming system they use now, instead of just using the chip's actual frequency. An An Athlon XP2000 is as fast as a 2.0ghz P4B, even though the Athlon 2000+ runs at 1.6ghz. And your question about which is better in the long run is really dependent on what your plans are for the system. If gaming is pretty much all you plan on doing with it, then an A64 is what you should buy. If you're planning on ripping and encoding 3 DVD's a day, while multitasking with other high cpu-usage applications (like gaming, for instance), then you should build yourself a P4C-based system.

I dunno if chips coming out will be that much faster. The fastest chip according to the roadmap will be a 754 pin 3700+ which will be probably be 2.4 ghz compared to the 2.2 ghz 3400+.

After the 3700+, the only new chips that wiill be released will be 754 pin XP's... meaning they'll only have 256 kb's of L2 and won't be able to run the 64 bit extension.

Hopefully, the demands for the socket 754 will be great enough that they'll release more A64 clawhammer chips with 64 bit extension... or else... we're gonna have to get a socket 939 board instead...

Actually the 3400+ will be at 2.4Ghz with 512kb cache. The 754 will have all the newcastles and we have already seen that the cache size really does not help that much. It might help on a dual Ch memory setup when doing encoding etc... but not rigth now. SO the 3700+ MIGHT be 2.6-2.8Ghz. Overclock that to 3-3.2 Ghz when the new chipsets come out and you get a cheap bang for your buck that will really move.

Intel has not come out with THEIR new socket and chips so AMD does not need to come out with anything new yet as they are pretty much king of the hill for NOW. That and they are also gearing up for socket 939. So a couple of factors.
