Honestly the difference in timings between it's SPD of 3-3-3-7 and 2.5-3-3-6@400DDR was basically indistinguishable so even the Micron should be great for running stock speed. I've just always had great results from Samsung when using inexpensive ram so that's my first choice.

Thanks, DAPUNISHER. I just took your advice myself, ordered the rest of my kit from NewEgg today. A64 3000+ (oem), 2x512MB Buffalo PC3200 (Samsung chips), Arctic Silver Ceramique (AS-5 was out of stock), Koutech PCI Firewire controller. I'd planned to wait for the 15th for the CPU, which is why I didn't order the full AK86-L bundle from mwave, but my current rig won't go more than a few minutes at a time between BSOD.

Saved enough on RAM that I won't feel too irresponsible tomorrow if I decide to snag a Dell 1800FP on the last day of their current sale. I'm still mulling that one over.

Thanks for all of the help guys. Received my parts yesterday and had everything up and running - very satisfied!

Went with the ASUS mobo and Buffalo ram as well as the enermax noisetaker PSU suggested. Bought a 36GB WD Raptor drive for an OS disk and a Seagate 200GB (pata) drive for storage and installed everything into a Lian Li PC60 case. Boy did that Raptor drive seem a heck of a lot faster when installing win2k!

Still need to slap in an adequate gaming video card; borrowed a dual head matrox card from work temporarily. But aside from that this thing is a dream.

Moved up from:
Tyan Trinity (don't recall the model number) mobo
Thunderbird 900
768MB RAM
Geforce 4 TI4200
Soundblaster Live Value

So a huge speed bump for me :)

Just wanted to say thanks and let you guys know your advice was not only welcomed but helped me be an extremely satisfied customer although a customer with a much lighter wallet now.

Great to see that you are up and running :) I was going to suggest trying a little overclocking but after the rig you upgraded from it's already such a huge speed jump across the board, including the Raptor, that really, why bother? ;)

Maybe sometime down the line I'll give overclocking a whirl - I'm rather cowardly in that area. But yes this is a very large speed bump for me lol. :) I had wanted to wait until the new Windows XP had been released for a few months and it had good driver support, but with my main rig dying on me I wasn't left with much of an option (in my mind) ;)

Thanks again - very happy!

I'm using a MSI Motherboard which I decided to get over the Asus. I have had no problems so far and it runs great.
