What motherboard would you suggest on my budget?
At most $150 - for an athlon 64 mobo I'm thinking of either the 2800 or 3000
At most $250 - for ram capable of running at 400mhz with two chips installed.

I'd like to have 1gb of ram at 400mhz

I would like the following:
Sata & IDE (raid isn't needed), AGP 8x, 4-5 PCI Slots

Optional onboard things I don't need:
Sound, Nic

I don't think I'm going to be overclocking this board - The main thing I want from this setup is stability.

My other 'important' hardware - 9800 pro 128mb, 80gb wd ide 7200rpm hdd 8mb cache, dvdrw,cdrw.

I have read a lot of motherboards have problems running two chips at 400 mhz and I am puzzled at what hardware to get.

Thanks

I might recommend a couple of boards one is a MSI

The second would be a Abit.

I really like the Abit, it has a nice function the secure IDE. It encrypts your hard drive with 128 bit encryption. Real cool. The only draw back with this board is; it can not use more then 2 400MHz modules, but the bright side is it takes up to 2 gigs in 2 slots.

The memory I would recommend for obvious reasons is:

We have the Abit motherboard in our lab and it run great, I plan on getting this board when I am able.

Just my thoguhts.

I'm really liking that MSI board.

Here is the ram I'm looking at for it:

Kingston ValueRAM Dual Channel Kit 184 Pin 1G(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - Retail

Model# KVR400X64C3AK2/1G
Item # N82E16820141423
Specification
Manufacturer: Kingston
Speed: DDR400(PC3200)
Type: 184 Pin DDR SDRAM

Registered/Unbuffered: Unbuffered
Cas Latency: 3

$209

Will I have any problems running this on the board? I didn't see kingston listed on the mobo website compatibility/tested list but I figure it should work. I know the motherboard doesn't do dual channel but that is okay.. I might be able to use this ram later down the road in dual channel.
