Was a bit skeptical at first regarding eMachines venture into the 64-bt notebook world, but after some first hand experience with a few M6XX, they are excellent value-market machines. A number of local retailers typically offer excellent deals on them as well (CircuitCity, Best Buy, etc). Do not believe they yet offer a higher resolution display, however (only WXGA).
Two other suggestions: (a)The
Mitac 8355. Notables like Hypersonic and Voodoo have made use of this particular model Mitac in their own machines, but if one avoids the higher priced resellers, one can find this machine at a reasonable price. WXGA only, if memory serves. (b)Perhaps slightly out of your budgetary range, the
NP4750 should be considered as well; especially as it does indeed offer a higher resolution display (17" WSXGA+).
Perhaps may prove useful to begin perusing
