Athlon 64 laptops?

Ok, so I'm selling my Inspiron 5150, and have about $1400 to spend on a laptop. I'd like to get an Athlon 64. I've been looking at the emachines, but does anyone know if you can get any better than wxga? I'm looking for one with wsxga+. Any recommendations? Battery life and portability don't really matter. I can also get a dell 9100 for around that price refurbished. What do you all think?

I've been very happy with my Emachines A64 laptop. It's fast, the screen is nice, and the media card readers are stunningly fast. The trackpad mouse buttons are, again, way too stiff for my taste. I like the wide screen a lot, the extra screen real estate is very useful. I want a wide screen for my desktop now 🙂 The Radeon 9600 Mobility graphics are impressive for a laptop, games run surprisingly well, with a surprising amount of eye candy turned on.

Downsides: The drivers that come with the machine are all you'll ever get from Emachines. Only one of the two RAM slots is "user accessible", meaning that you'll have to void the warranty to upgrade both slots. And the hard disk, like so many other laptops, is excruciatingly dog slow.

Was a bit skeptical at first regarding eMachines venture into the 64-bt notebook world, but after some first hand experience with a few M6XX, they are excellent value-market machines. A number of local retailers typically offer excellent deals on them as well (CircuitCity, Best Buy, etc). Do not believe they yet offer a higher resolution display, however (only WXGA).

Two other suggestions: (a)The Mitac 8355. Notables like Hypersonic and Voodoo have made use of this particular model Mitac in their own machines, but if one avoids the higher priced resellers, one can find this machine at a reasonable price. WXGA only, if memory serves. (b)Perhaps slightly out of your budgetary range, the NP4750 should be considered as well; especially as it does indeed offer a higher resolution display (17" WSXGA+).

Perhaps may prove useful to begin perusing this forum.

I've actually found a guy willing to sell me a Sager 4780 for $1500! 3 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB 7200 RPM drive, DVD-RW, radeon 9600 pro 128 MB. Quite a deal! I'm working out the specifics now. Once I get it, I'll let you all know how it is! Thanks!
