Athlon 64 dual core versus Pentium 4 dual core plus hyperthreading

Does Hyperthreading become obsolete with the arrival of dual core ?


Anybody well verse in CPU's have a guess ?

As long as the p4 has that terribly long pipeline it can help...dual xeons with HT help so I wouldn't see why not....
However all reports I have seen shows dual core will end HT menaing I dont thinkit is supposed to show up in the dual core smithfields based on the prescott core.....So this may be a moot point....

Intel's desktop P4's won't use hyperthreading, but the EEs and, I believe, xeons will. Meaning they will have two physical cores, four virtual ones.

I've heard conflicting reports on this. Some say yes, some say no. In any case, you'll just need a patch to run dual 2c CPU's on XP Pro.

No, because it can still make up for, and "hide" the in-efficiencies of the P4/NetBurst pipeline design.

However, for those people using a version of Windows' that is only licensed for two processors, they may find that enabling HT in the BIOS does nothing, because the OS will only use the first two listed logical processors, which happen to be the first "physical" processor of each of the HT-capable cores. So in that sense, yes, sort of.
