Athlon 64 3000+ Needs No Fan on heatsink?

I read a review of a silent heatsink using the Athlon 64 3000+, and one of the tests was performed with the fan turned off. The results showed that the temperature of the A643k was only about 5 degrees hotter when the fan was turned off.

I'm building a Windows XP Media Center 2005 box based on the Athlon 64 3000+.

Can I get by with just a good heat sink on the CPU?
 
Maybe(and I am just guessing here)but when the cool N quiet is working and the CPU is running at 800Mhz, then maybe you could get by without a fan on the heatsink. But I would not even try it if its running at a higher speed. I wouldn't even try it at that speed, but thats me.
 
Yea I would like to see that review also, im working on my next daw and if this is even close to being possible it would be great as noise is the biggest issue i have right now...
 
Depending on how much airflow your case has it is definitely possible with the new 90nm A64.

The Winchester 3000+ only uses 30-40W under maximum load:

Not sure if it would work in a SFF system since you would want as large a cooler as possible, such as the new Zalman 7700 or Thermalright XP-120.

Definitely a possibility though if you don't want to spend the extra $300 to get a P-M setup.

I'm more interested in a heatsink/fan that is quiet and effective. I'm building a Windows XP Media Center 2005 entertainment box, and I don't want to hear the fans running.

SilenX is an attractive models.

Can you suggest others?
 
I'd go for a Thermalright XP120 and a 120mm fan @ 800RPM, or so. I think that's enough to cool even the Winchester 3500+. And it's practically noiseless! I'm personally using an AthlonXP @ 2.3GHz (1.6V) that I cool with an SLK-900A and a 92mm ADDA 1600RPM fan and even that is almost noiseless. From a few meters away it's hard to tell if the computer is on or off...
 
I think easy with copper and Q&C enabled.

I mean 2W-12W Idle to only 30W load like the links KLAH posted says... Copper has much higher thermal conductivity and much less heat capacity as stock HS which is almunimum meaning the uptake of heat is high and it gives it off faster.
