AMD use to have a bad rap for heat issues now intel is joing the club. The only draw back I see is that an A64 will not do run your ram in Dual Channel Mode... I also think that the A64 does not do any Hyper Threading.

But all in all, the A64 is cheaper and a bit faster so, I think DualChannel and HT are minor things when you talk about 32 Vs. 64 Bit CPU's. Intel has some catching up to do. Or you could wait for Mulit Processor Chips to come out! Since Heat issues are so big Intel and AMD are going to come out with Dual Core CPU's soon. Ahhh, Quad HT chips for everyone! 🙂

Gee how soon is your soon? 8-10 years? what is the everything that will be 64 bit? software, games like what ? do you think 64 bit software is that much faster? and if something came out 64 bit only your wrong it would not run slow on a 32 bit system it just wouldn't run.

You are right, 64-bit software would not run on a 32-bit system. But I think the transition to 64-bit will come sooner than you think, 32-bit systems are limited to 4gb ram and it won't be long till some applications/games can take advantage of that much, currently 1gb is becoming more common in everyday systems and alot of gamers already heading towards 2gb. The process has already begun, Linux and Microsoft both have 64-bit OS available, it's just a matter of time. How much time nobody knows but its coming in next few years. How does this compare to what I have in my profile? I wish this was around when I was shopping! I'm thinking about selling my proc and mobo for this

Wow, I check newegg almost every day and didn't see this deal. Thanks for pointing it out... if the Abit motherboard comes back in stock i'll buy it right away.

Compared to your Mobile Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.3ghz (200x11.5) you wouldn't see a huge performance increase, if you research benchmarks (there are 2 reviews posted above in this thread) it scores usually above an athlon XP 3000+, but with your cpu running at 3200+ speeds or slightly above performance would probably be equal on most areas but there are some areas it would still outperform it. These processors are more advanced in data archiving, gaming, multitasking than the XP models. Due to the motherboards being offered (currently no PCI lock) there is no overclock ability with this combo, but these run cool and quiet which is a plus and the 64-bit ability is nice when the transition comes. Do some research and see if it's worth it for your needs, if you like to overclock you may want to hold out for a nforce 3 mobo or the new via k8t800 pro chipsets.

The transition to 64 bit has already started. But the time until it takes over 32-bit is going to be more than "a few years". And its HIGHLY doubtful any programmer would release a 64-bit version only, as 32-bit is, and still will be used by the bulk of computer users over the next half decade
Considering intel hasnt even paper launched a consumer 64-bit cpu tells you how far off we are. Sure, Amd has their athlon, but without both of the two major processor companies supporting it now, it will be a while until it becomes mainstream.

Would an Antec SL300 (300W) be enough power supply for the parts in this deal (assuming a very basic setup, i.e. 9800 Pro or some mid range card, 1 optical, 1 HD)? TIA.

EDIT: Corrected model number.

The transition will not be ruled by cpu makers, Microsoft is calling for the support now, and it is no doubt the future. As said before nobody knows when the change will fully take place but it is inevitable. It's the users choice to decide whether they want to be prepared now or later, but it is worth mentioning the importance 64-bit will serve and it surely can't hurt having the technology now.

Nicely said.

That is a good question. I am running my setup @ 300W and I think that 300W may be a little under powered. It runs, but acts funny sometimes. My exact setup is:
A64 2800+
Gigabyte K8T800
2x 512 PC3200
DVD-ROM
CD-RW
120GB 7200RPM HD
Radeon 9700 pro

Yeah 300w PSU may be a little underpowered, I think 350w-380w antec PSU are rated up to 3ghz not sure about the 300w tho, and the video card will definately be a factor, I believe starting with the 9500 series (9600/9700/9800 all included) a 350w PSU is recommended. Antec is a high quality PSU tho and may be able to handle it but if you find you have issues you may want to look into upgrading into a 350-480w range quality brand psu.

Yeah it appears they pulled the Abit combo from the $223 section, however that is probably just due to it being out of stock, it still shows the $82 discount option on the bottom corner of the product description for the Abit mobo.

If you're interested, there's a Thermaltake 420W PS at newegg now for $39 shipped. Not too bad and could clear up your "funny" issues.

kinda... I don't OC... and it was much cheaper for me to go with an a64 rig with higher halo performance than a 32-bit p4 rig..

Eh I had to buy it, just went with the chaintech, but i'll end up trying to sell it later for a nforce 3 250 based board when I want to over clock, but I couldnt argue with that price!

Is the 2800+ multi locked at 9 or 10? Someone said 10 but I dont see that being true.

i received mine today. I have the CPU up to 2GHz so far at default voltage on a different nforce3 250 motherboard (bought the Abit). I'll be happy if it gets up to 2.2GHz. 😀

Damn you and your mobo that doesnt suck. What are you going to do with the abit? I might just throw mine up on ebay if no one wants it from here. Too bad I've got the chaintech, wanna trade? Haha

Did you end up trying the Abit board at all? Any thoughts or general feelings of quality/appearance/performance/stability? Thanks in advance.

The 2800+ is locked for multipliers above its stock default according to reviews, however with the proper mobo the lower multipliers should still be available, and the max multiplier 2800+ should be 9x (runs @ 1.8 ghz, 9X200).

No, I didn't try it. But it does look pretty nice. 😉
