Athlon 5350 mini video Review

Note that intel has a pentium 3556U which is a 15W part that scores 905 in the single thread benchmark, vs 25W kabini's 778. This chip can be found in a Dell Inspiron 11 3137 for just over $400. But even more significant is the pentium 3350M which is slightly more power (37W) but this chip is almost identical to a wolfdale E8600 in performance.

thats all good but do they cost under 30 euro?

Passmark has a single threaded benchmark so there is no need to butcher the multithreaded score to arrive at a single thread estimate. An E8400 scores 1256. An E8600 scores 1378. Kabini (A6-5200 @ 2GHz) scores only 774. A simple linear extrapolation tells us that a 2 GHz kabini is roughly the same as a 1.7GHz wolfdale. There is no way I could recommend that level of performance for anyone. Not in 2014. It would choke on just about any basic task. There is way more javascript running on today's browsers compared to 5 years ago when a 1.7GHz wolfdale was enough. I think it is a tragedy that AMD is releasing a 25 watt part that cannot significantly outperform a 10W intel CULV from 4 years ago. Putting gpu aside, of course. All I can say about the gpu is that I didnt stop using my intel CULV ultraportable because of its anemic 4500MHD gpu. I stopped because the cpu clock and IPC were too low for general web surfing usage.

I have a system with a c2q @ 1.6 GHz that I use for a file server and a couple of other things. I've never had any issues doing any basic tasks with the machine, including browsing, watching HD videos online or offline, office work, even some modern games that can use 4 cores run perfectly fine (Deus Ex, Max Payne 3, a couple others). I think you're grossly overestimating how much cpu power an average user needs today.

also, if you check the scores of a more thermally constrained core 2 part, like the t8300, the ipc begins to look about 1 to 1, at least on the site being used in this thread

For me it was a bit opposite, my C2D notebook sits on a shelf mainly because of anemic GPU combined with the fan needing to kick into high gear when utilizing the CPU to any extent. I tested out an A6-5200 and it was OK for 'regular' usage. I'd probably have gotten one except the OEMs at the time only had 15.6" 5200 products and not the 13.3 or 14 inch size I prefer.

The Celeron 1037U mini-itx boards are pretty comparable in price to AM1 board + 5350. Granted no upgrade option, which will be somewhat relevent for AM1 if the faster and more efficient Kabini replacement drops in. Also the 1037U retail selection has begun to shrink, looks like the board makers are planning to replace them in the sub-$100 with slower but more efficient Atom mini-itx boards.

Nothing wrong with AM1 so far, looks like retail will will have a reasonable range of bare minimum to feature full board offerings. If AMD delivers faster drop in CPUs for it over the next 12-18 months then I think there will be few reasons to pan it.

AM1 has a push pin design (with a sleeve the pin inserts into). As I recall, the sleeves first insert into the motherboard holes and then the push-pins insert into the sleeves.

The Celeron 1037U mini-itx boards are pretty comparable in price to AM1 board + 5350. Granted no upgrade option, which will be somewhat relevent for AM1 if the faster and more efficient Kabini replacement drops in.

The ECS and Foxconn 1037U boards are ~$70 plus shipping. (Sometimes the Biostar 1037U drops into that price bracket as well). From what I gather the Athlon 5350 cpu will be about $60 alone.

So far I haven't seen any of the 1037U boards discountinued (at Newegg at least). Which ones are you referring to?

You can get an mATX + Celeron (G1610) setup for cheap in the UK.
AM1 doesn't seem to have made it to the UK yet though.

I was thinking in terms of Steam inhome streaming.

I'm assuming 2d games should be fine at 1080p like rayman legends.

Looking at the drivers I was going to ask you to check Catalyst 14.3 beta 1, but i dont see any improvements or support.

PASSIVE COOLING TEMP TEST

Just to explain what i did, i just disconnected the fan for 10 min and ran Prime 95 with 4 threads. No airflow inside my room.

Nice temps and thank you for doing that test. (about the only thing extra I could have asked for was Prime 95 four threads + furmark)

Now I am hopeful the dual core Kabini DT APUs will be able to run completely passive (assuming the bin isn't really bad for some reason) in a cramped and poorly ventilated SFF case with two or three 3.5" hard drives.

Edit: Kabini's SoC design only has two SATA ports on it, btw. ASRock's ITX AM1 mobos include a secondary ASMedia chip for two additional SATA ports. (One of the reasons that I want an ASRock AM1 board specifically, for my new HTPC. I want an SSD, a Blu-Ray, and 1-2 storage HDDs.)

Yes, I actually have that board with the E1-2100 soldered on (1 Ghz dual core Jaguar, 300 Mhz iGPU). It is not a bad performer for the money.

I was referring to (as an example) the E1-2650 (1.45 Ghz dual core Jaguar, 400 Mhz iGPU) found in this article:

Being able to run passive would also allow that chip to be used in cramped cases like the APEX MI-008 and Rosewill RS-MI-01 BK. As it stands the AM1 stock cooler with fan looks too tall to fit underneath the SFX psu.

Yes, I like the two Asrock AM1 Mini-ITX boards with four SATA ports as well (particularly the one with both DC-in and 24 pin power). Unfortunately I'll bet the total package with CPU will be quite expensive compared to what a person could buy from Intel. But maybe I will be wrong and we will see prices settle sometime after the launch.

Going by pre-order prices a 5350 + mini-itx board will be at least a $30-40 (~$100-110) premium over current 1037U offerings. Might see ~$20 of downward settling given a bit of time.

OP can you test with cinebench R10 so we can compare IPC with K8 and K10? It seems most of those CPUs on the Anand bench are run with R10.

I have some bad news I ran the test again and i did not realize it at first but when it got too hot the CPU clock speed automatically dropped. Read the note i have added in post one.
I did the test you requested and a have added a new efficient PSU in the Test! Makes quite a difference!!! 😵

Athlon64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz scores 1,2~1,25 in CB11.5 MT.
Athlon 5350 2.0GHz scored 1,99
Divided by number of cores and core clock:
Athlon64 X2 = 0,24
Athlon 5350 = 0,25
So the new athlon is faster overall by almost 60% and have slightly better IPC/core.

Not a year ago, I successfully played games on Athlon64 X2 5000+. Path of exile beta, Civ 5 are the recent ones I remember... Blacklight retribution was giving it a hard time but was playable. Planetside2 beta (before optimizations) was unplayable if more players were on screen, but that game was a hog back then.

Further questioning to Adam Kozak has suggested that the AM1 systems should support memory overclocking above the verified DDR3-1600 MHz speed. Unfortunately these APUs will not have any Turbo Core technology however, nor will they support CPU overclocking.

How much tall is the complete heatsink including fan ?

How much tall is the alu part , the heatsink itself ?

The Fan is 50mm width , correct ?
