I was originally going with a Athlon64 3700+ but someone in the forums recommended an X2 3800+. After checking on things if I was going to spend more on that processor then I might as well spend a couple extra and go 4000+ or an Opteron 165. Prices on the egg 282, 334 and 355 for X2 3800, 4000 and 165 respectively.
This is all planned to go on a Asus A8N Premium with 2G memory and I didn't plan on oc'ing but if I do it will not be extreme. It's a first build (because I can) and once it's done I want reliability. My wife also would use it and would be pissed if I spent all this money and it didn't function.
Last pc is a pII 450 so whatever goes in it, it's going to be a lot faster.

Want to order parts so please give input.

I'd definately go the extra bucks for the Opteron 165, purely on the fact that it is a monster OC'er.

But since you don't plan on doing much OC'ing, I'd stick to the 4000+.

At stock settings only the serious gamer will discover the 4000+ outperforms the 3800 X2 and 165. If you intend to do a moderate overclock, say 2.4, then I'd probably go with the 3800 although the 4000+ can be overclocked as well. I hear the 3800 overclocks easier. Plus you get the added benefit of dual core multitasking. If you want to try serious overclocking, say anything over 2.6 then the 165 will probably have a eaier time of it although some 3800s have reached 2.7. The 165 is a server chip and is just more bullet proof as they say. Can take more abuse. Personally if it came down between the two dual core chips I'd say go with the cheapest delivered to you.
