Athlon 4 chip in Desktop

I have seen some cheap 850-900mhz Athlon 4 chips on ebay. I was wondering if anyone has any experience or suggenstions about using these in desktop boards. Can these be overclocked any higher since they are Palimino chips and athlon XP (palimino) chips start at like 1266 (1500+) real mhz and these are only like 850-900mhz with a 100mhz FSB, while all the Athlon XP's have 133mhz FSBs?

edit: This claims you can use them in regular socket A motherboards.... sort of.

No. For mobile platforms, the system bus runs at a lower voltage, and a number of additional pins are defined for mobile specific functions (such as AMD PowerNow! technology). In general, the mobile AMD Athlon 4 processor is not supported in a desktop Socket A system.

I think it works, but you don't get the extra features. No guarantees - I've never tried it and can't find any articles claiming that it was tested and worked.

Use google. It was a mobile athlon XP. I think its nomeclature topped out at 1600+

I have been told that the older Athlon 4 mobile chips should work on any board supporting the Palimino core (Athlon XP). Now the question is how to Pin Mod them and see how well they overclock

I thought they were multiplier locked? Powernow requires this.

This is interesting - the other day I was working on an older HP computer that had a sticker on the front (manufacturer-supplied) that stated it had an Athlon 4 inside. It looked like an earlier version of the Athlon XP sticker. I assumed that HP had access to pre-release chips before AMD changed the moniker to Athlon XP. Makes you wonder what the major OEMs currently have running in their R&D departments!

The "mobile Athlon 4" product name was used for the earliest Palomino core mobile Athlons, 1200 MHz and below, before the desktop Palominos even appeared, introducing the Athlon XP product name that _then_ also got used for the mobile parts. AMD's "Processor Recognition" application note PDF has the precise facts about this.
