Hey all,

Any ideas why the Athlon 3000G went from $50 to $100? I'm confused about the releases, why this would go up instead of stay down with upcoming releases.

At this point the 3000G is the same price as 3200G and the 3400G is only $40 more.

Did I miss something?

Very best,

Ugh. Oh well. Was going to attempt an inexpensive Athlon build with the 3000G for my observatory computer. It doesn't need much. But at these prices, for what these are, looks like I'm better off with a 3400G at $140 and get a lot more horsepower for future application. The machine runs observatory software, planetarium, and operates high speed USB3 CMOS cameras that dump to a 1TB SSD. So it doesn't really need to be fast, but I guess for the prices, might as well have a 4c/8t option and APU to avoid more "parts" needed in the box. Keeping it simple.

Very best,

Crazy, isn't it? I think AMD is aiming to not sell CPUs or APUs for under $100.

I can't blame them. There are millions of off lease business workstations that can be had from near free to $150 that just crushes the entry market value stuff in terms of performance.

Hey, Intel Pentiums have to have some breathing room :tearsofjoy:

The 3400G is a great CPU. I have high hopes for the 5xxx Zen 3 based APUs.

@MalVeauX I am needing to move a i3-8100, new motherboard & 8GB of ram for a really reasonable price. DM me if you might be interested. I mention this as the 8100 appears to be around that $50 mark used, and lacking in GPU it has plenty of CPU for the tasks you describe.

In the German market the 3000G has been out of stock for a little over a month now. Some stores allow you to order it at those significantly higher prices, but next shipment appears to be on 11.11. for all of them.

I wonder why any chips manufactured at GloFo would have stock issues. Maybe some bottleneck in assembly, overworked OSAT?

Maybe the places producing these chips was halted for Zen3 production?
That's the thing. Zen2/Zen3 are produced on TSMC's 7nm (or variants thereof). Zen+ APUs are produced on GF 12/14 nm. A shortage on one shouldn't really affect the other.

I honestly think that as AMD re-positions their brand as a "Premium" CPU/APU maker, that they will seek to limit production or eliminate their cheaper, lower-end lineup.

The other possible reason might be OEM and laptop demand. Ryzen 3 3200U 2C/4T is (I think) made from the same dies, and as shown by what has happened with Renoir, OEMs get priority over DIY market.

Zen 2 (Matisse and Renoir) and Zen 3 (Vermeer) are being manufactured at TSMC. Everything older (which includes 3000G, 3200G and 3400G) is manufactured at Global Foundries.

that would be very strange, since Intel offers plenty of CPUs at sub $100 and I assume there is some OK volume for these parts,

I think if AMD doesn't offer anything at this range, people will just buy Intel CPUs like the G6400

The IO die for Zen 2 and 3 aren't made at GF? If so, they eat up capacity, and are more important because those dies go into much higher revenue CPUs (including Epyc, Threadripper)

The IO die is still made at GF, but GF 14nm/12nm node is not exactly a popular node, AMD should have plenty of capacity available from GF both both the IO die and Zen/Zen+ CPUs. They have 2 fabs for 12nm/14nm (fab 8 and fab 10). I don't know fab 10's volume, but fab 8 alone can do 60K wafers per month. They did sell fab 10 to ON Semi but it doesn't actually transfer control until 2022 I believe.

Where did it go from $50 to $100? I hope you aren't looking at 3rd party sellers on Newegg or Amazon marketplace.

I just also notice in my country there's a significant price hike at most of low-end Zen1 SKUs(200ge, R3-1200) since last month. Still hard to judge why this happened(maybe some guys decided to go for Zen1+B450 budget rig to wait for Zen3 transition while they knew Zen3 overwhelming performance lol). But to say the least AMD's low-end is facing a short-term supply shortage which is not good for marketshare......

Price hike due to stock drying up. Though I'd guess SKUs like 200GE may well be gone for good, 3000G is coming back in a couple weeks (at least here in Germany).

I wish there were benchmarks for the USB bus performance, USB3 and USB3.x performance of raw data feeds (like from large MP CMOS USB cameras) to see if there's any impact using the 3000G (2 cores, 4 HT) vs 3200G (4 cores, no HT) vs 3400G (4 cores, 8 HT) vs 2600 (6 cores, 12 HT).

Looking at the 3000G vs 3200G (cores vs HT) it seems the real selling point is the GPU portion of the 3200G? Otherwise, I'm not sure there's real benefit to the 4 cores versus just having 2 cores and 4 total threads? At least in real world use for this? Then the 3400G of course moves on to mainstream type configuration. And then I'm just curious how something like the older 2600 would do in the same area. I don't need a GPU at all other than display purposes, so I may not need to bother putting anything into an APU where I'm paying for gaming GPU stuff on a CPU that is otherwise crippled for cost compared to another series without a GPU?

Very best,

Agreed. I might go as far as to say that the only reason AMD even made these products was to build/maintain relationships with OEMs.
