Athlon 2600 shows up at 1700

I am getting really frusterated here. When I put the processor in, the BIOS said it was a 1700. It won't let me change it to higher than that. I downloaded a BIOS update that specifically said added support for the 2600.

I boot into windows, and CPUID also says that I have a 1700+ processor.

The sticker on the CPU says 2600.

Did I get ripped off on the cpu, or is my motherboard screwing up?

100 fsb?

Try 133 X 2 = 266

It is 133 fsb. 11 multiplier (which is as high as it'll let me go. There is an option for 14, but its shows up as something like (5.5, 14) and when I boot as that, it uses the 5.5

Ok, just got it to boot at 12.5 multiplier. It still calls it a 1700.

Actual core speed is 1681.2

In order to get the 12.5, the option in the bios read 12.5, 13.0

Why in the heck is it listing two options, and then only using the lower of the two?

What multiplier and core speed is the 2600 supposed to have?

Ok, this may be my motherboards fault. It says 2600 cpu support IF you have 1.07 PCB version. The best I can find for version number on my board is 1.xx

is it one of the newer 2600+, that have a 166/333fsb?

Please note that there are three (3) diffrent types of 2600+
tbred 133fsbX16multiplier (2133mhz)
tbred 166fsbX12.5multiplier (2083mhz)
Barton 166fsbX11.5multiplier (1916mhz)
Which CPU do you have? What board are you putting this CPU on, and does it accept 166fsb? If you have a 166fsb CPU, and an old MB you might have problems unless you underclock the CPU (not worth it)

It is a 133 cpu, and a 133 motherboard. I found on on the manufacturers website that it wasn't compatable, even though their bios update said 2600 compatible. I just put in a new motherboard and everything is working good now

are you sure its not the 166mhz fsb one? by far the majority of xp2600+ cpu's are designed for 166mhz fsb not 133mhz

I am absolutely positive. ESPECIALLY since i have it working in anothe motherboard as we speak.

does the mobo that its working in default the setting to 16x multiplier? or do you have to manually set it at 16x?

It defaulted to a 2400, so I told it I had a 2600, and it set the multiplier on its own.

if its not defaulting to 2600 then it still makes me suspect that its not a 2600+ (266) but a 2600+ (333) designed for a 166mhz fsb

tbreds come in 2 flavors
the 2600+ (333) will have a default multiplier of 12.5
the 2600+ (266) will have a default multiplier of 16

so assuming your motherboard supports the both 333 and 266 parts. then when you install the cpu the mobo will default with one of the 2 settings above, which ever setting it defaults to will let you know which cpu you have

as a side note:
its normal for some motherboards to report the wrong cpu if the fsb is set incorrect. meaning if you run an xp2600+ (333 ) on a 133mhz fsb some motherboards will report it durring post as a 1700+

my board does something similar
i have an xp2500+ (barton, 333) when i set the fsb to 166mhz durring post it reports it as a xp2500+ (it always reads 2500+ no matter what the actual clock speed or what multiplier im running).... and when i set it to 200mhz fsb it reads durring post as a xp3200+ (again it aways reads xp3200+ even if i lower the multiplier so its only running 1.6ghz)
