I just put together a 2600+ system on an Epox 8RGMI (Nforce 2). On bootup i noticed it had dected the CPU as a 2500+, which was cleary wrong as i purcahased a 2600+ (Barton).

Anyway, on further invesigation i found that it was running at 11.5x166 and at its correct 1917mhz that it should be. However CPUID and windows all detects it as a 2500+, so whats going on? I also updated the bios to what i could find on the Epox website but that didn't change anything either.

All i can conclude is that because the 2600+ have only recently become the barton core, the mainboard is trying to recongize the chip as a slighty overclocked 2500+...........??

Any ideas or thoughts on this? Could it be solved?

Sounds like a bios issue. Sometimes mb manufacturers are slightly behind CPU names. Since the latest bios for that board came out 7/29/03, it's fair to say that it doesn't know a 2600+ barton exists. Heck, I didn't know they existed until I read this thread! :p

Yeah a BIOS update would fix it. For example, with my Asus P5A (old Socket 7 board) and AMD K6-2 500MHz, it detected it as a K6-2 497MHz. This sort of bothered me, so I found a beta never released BIOS (very risky I know but I hardly use this box and I have spare Socket7 mobos). Anyway, this BIOS update fixed the problem and it detected it as 500MHz! But as long as it is the correct MHz, it doesn't really matter.

So basically i'll have to (if ever) wait for a new bios revision to fix such a problem.. Umm... I suppose its running at the same speed, but it still annoys me a little!

Bingo. the 2600+ Barton just came out, so most companies dont have a bios that supports it yet, as long as it is at the correct Mhz, it is just as fast as the price your paying for, do not worry about the 2500+ name.
