Athlon 2600+ MP Press Release

The AMD Athlon MP processor 2600+ is priced at $273 in 1,000-unit quantities.

Seems to me that yields at AMD are increasing lately. I might have to start looking into building another duallie someday in the near future.

There is a little discussion about that chip here. Ok sorry I had to do it.

I'm just curious what the 2600+MP has to do with increasing yields? The 2800+ T-bred is still not in stores in any quantity (pricewatch retailers say they will have the first 2800+ T-bred in stock on Feb 21). In fact the 3000+ Barton should be out before the 2800+ T-bred if the rumors at The Inquirer are true.

Yield isn't really an issue when you sell very few of that CPU. Why AMD still even produces MP's baffles me, they have to be losing much cash on that line.

Well it's quite simple... Chip manufacturers come up with a chip design which becomes a version such as T-bred or Barton. When production begins the yields on viable chips are generally low for high end chips and high for low end chips. For example, Barton-based chips have higher yields at 2500+ than at 3000+. Yields explain the difference in cost in chips from low-end to high-end except when supply vs. demand becomes an economic issue. As production of chips moves along, over time the yields for higher end chips increase due to tweaks in the manufacturing process. Therefore I can draw the conclusion that yields are increasing [for higher end chips].

The CPUs usually come out a little lower in price than AMD's 1000's price, and I see that this $273 falls below the price of a 266-based AthlonXP 2600+ at Newegg's current pricing. Sounds like a winner.

Wait till later this month when the Barton CPU's have come to market and had a chance to filter down... I would guess that prices will fall to pretty stable levels towards the end of February for a little while.

See my post in the original Anandtech 2600+ MP thread (I linked it above). I mentioned that the Athlon XPs are in the midst of a price cut. That MP cheaper than XP won't last for long. Also note: street prices for MPs are quite often HIGHER than the official 1000 lot prices, while the street prices for the XPs are almost always lower. Look at pricewatch, the official 1000 lot price for the 2400+ MP is $228 while pricewatch shows it sells for $232 or more.

They make the MP for sale to the highend corporations.

I cant remember at the moment, but if someone looks back about 2 months ago for a contract agreement AMD made with a computer maker for making a computer that holds 28 MP's in one computer.
(or something like that)

Can you imagine that?

Noid, are you sure that wasn't an agreement for Clawhammer? I think I remember seeing a new article but it was about the upcoming Clawhammer and not the Athlon MP. Something along the lines of co-developing a multiprocessor computing grid from Clawhammer processors.

All MP chips thus far have come unlocked. There's no reason to assume this one won't be either.

I'm waiting for a Dual AMD motherboard that has full voltage adjustments, multiplier adjustments, a good range of FSB speeds, full memory timing options, PCI/AGP lock etc, such as a Dual CPU nForce2-style board :)

I would love to be run a pair of 2600+ MPs @ 200MHz FSB each ;)

heres old MP news ...

MP news

Well ... maybe I was confused ... this computer uses 10,000 chips ... lol

Opteron processor

anyway ... I give up on the other article ... :p

:) Dual-ddr AthlonMP boards would rock.

I'm right there with ya Confused! I want to take some MP's to the bleeding edge and get me the most total raw speed!

Hmmm, damn that would rock! :) Thinking of getting a Dually 2400MP setup, but should I wait for the 2600's?

It doesn't seem that AMD will release any new SMP chipsets for their current SMP CPUs. As a result, I doubt we'll see any new motherboard models that haven't already been announced (knowing that not all of them have made it to production).

Now, if nVidia tried to make an SMP version of nForce, ...
