new build

asus a7v266-c
cpu at defaults
swiftech mc462a Arctic Silver 3

cpu temps are running about 30 deg over case temps
cpu 57-64
case 26-30 in open case

removed and replaced HS, its on good and tight. this same cpu used to run 42-45 degs under load on my old board with the same case temps. any ideas?

edit: just found my problem, core voltage set at default in jumperfree mode is 2.17v!

Asus boards are calibrated higher than others, for starters. Same CPU, same heatsink, same actual core temp, higher reading due to the calibration... that could be a contributing factor, at least. What was your old board? Heatsink's not getting any interference from capacitors, etc?

previous board was asus a7v133. as mentioned above I see my vcore is 2.1+, but it's set to default(1.75) in BIOS

Ok, I think maybe I know the problem then. I'm going to download the manual to confirm it, but I suspect your motherboard has an overvoltage jumper and it's set to Enabled, which puts a 0.3V boost on whatever voltages you select. I'll get back with my findings...

Ok, if you have the manual, there's a good diagram on page 19 showing the Overvoltage jumpers. Looks like you should have the jumper on pins 2 and 3 for "normal" voltages. Hopefully that fixes things! (thank goodness you have a whopper heatsink, eh? ;))

you da man mechBgon! that overvoltage jumper clicked in my head after I noticed the high voltage.
the way the manual reads, I thought it was to ALLOW voltage increases but you're right, it added about 0.3v
set the jumper to disable

vcore=1.77
cpu temp=38 at idle

fixin to put a load on it but it looks good!

thanks again mechBgon!
