Athletic/microfiber-type clothing

Under Armour, Dri-Fit, etc. - have you experienced shorter useful life out of your deodorant when wearing this stuff? It seems like at the end of the day I can start to smell my pits whereas with regular cotton tops I am still odor-free.

Yeah. Every synthetic shirt I own smells like dirty feet after only one workout. Definitely trap odors worse than cotton. But I don't think it adversely affects deodorant in any way.

those are the only type of clothes I wear when I travel. cotton sucks for backpacking, take forever to dry, heavier, and doesn't breathe.

no, i don use deodorant either. no, i don't smell.

I start to stink only a few hours after wearing them. Plus I'm finding out they make me hotter like a radiator if I'm not moving. A lot hotter.

Interesting. Nobody had ever remarked on this to me.

Does this mean that cotton is actually superior for cooling?

How would cotton be superior for cooling? It doesn't breathe as well as synthetics and absorbs water.

I don't have the issue with synthetics as you do. I find that they wick sweat, breathe better and smell less than cotton.

The majority of synthetic fibers are harsh on the skin, don't breathe as well and are heavier compared to cotton. Thought this was common knowledge.

Synthetics trap odors, it's not you -- it's your shirt. There are some specialty detergents than can help with it, but I find it's generally not worth it. I use Charlie's Soap and don't seem to have that issue anymore though.

Add perspiration/sweat and tell me how breathable cotton is. I thought this was common knowledge. I suggest wearing some of the newer athletic clothing and I'll find that you'll have a hard time telling the difference if it's cotton or not.

Actually, cotton does breathe better. However, it doesn't wick moisture away from your skin, so you stay moister feeling while wearing it. Natural fibers almost always breathe better than synthetic, they just don't wick. Wool is the only natural fiber that will keep you warm while wet, the others will just contribute to hypothermia. breathable =/= wicking ability

more crap to soak up the sweat = less smell. that's generally been my experience. i think a lot of it has to do with the retention of your deodorant/antiperspirant, too.

same deodorant, same activity...hairy pits and a cotton shirt will leave me smelling fine. trim the forest and throwon one of those slick mesh workout shirts, i'm gonna fucking reek.

Yep, I'm generally not a smelly guy, but one wear of those things and they stink, but I can go running in a cotton t-shirt and it will not stink at all. Of course I still run in the athletic shirts since they are more comfortable for that purpose, I just have to wash them right away afterward.

Cotton sucks ass, how anybody could go back to a cotton shirt after using these defies belief. If you're seriously getting a real man's sweat going you don't want a cotton shirt.

Those materials most definitely shorten the life of my deodorant. Running or playing soccer are the only times I wear materials like that, and when I'm done they go right in the wash. They make me stink.
