Athletic Knee Brace Reccomendations

So 7 weeks ago, my right knee popped out of its socket thrice in a period of about two weeks. I went to the doctor and was told that they aren't exactly sure what is going on; the doctor did some quick 'tests' and said it seems that my knee looks to be okay, and she is guessing that over working the tendons led to the instability in my knee. She also referred me to get some xrays done (which I was only able to get done last week).
As a result, I stopped doing any exercise since about 5 weeks ago. I did high impact aerobic workouts thrice a week, did moderate strength training twice a week, and ran occasionally on Saturdays for 3 miles or so.

Now after this period of doing nothing, I can't say I feel the knee is any better. Some days it feels fine, others I can feel the 'weakness' in it. I'm going back Friday for the followup, as well as hopefully getting an clearance for getting an MRI done. The doctor wanted to do that first (the MRI), but said they have to get an Xray done prior to be sure there isn't a problem with my bones before they can move to other tests.

Now after 5 weeks worth of sitting and waiting....I'm starting to feel a little more lethargic. No longer I do wake up after just 7 hours of sleep. Now its just over 7.5 hours of sleep on average. I also miss the rush of energy I get after the workout that keeps me pushing throughout the day. It just feels good after a workout...and I'm finally feeling my gut is regressing and going back on all the progress I made over 3 months.

So I want to start up exercise again (of course, not before my Friday appointment first), but I want to use an athletic knee brace to give some stability. Does anyone have recommendations at all?

For what it's worth, my physical therapist recommended a neoprene sleeve after my ACL reconstruction.

I'm curious... why would your doctor send you to have x-rays for what logically appears to be soft tissue damage? Wouldn't an MRI make more sense? I mean, an MRI will show bone too...

They often do it for insurance purposes to rule out simple injuries. I had to do the same thing with my shoulder before they would get me an MRI.
